Savannakhet can be explored as a city and in the broader context of the province of the same name. Markets, the Mekong promenade, and historic buildings shape the cityscape; the province also offers religious sites, handicrafts, and nature reserves, among other attractions.

Market Life and the Mekong Promenade

Savanxay Market is the city’s largest market. Food, handicrafts, and everyday goods are sold there daily. This makes it a place to find a range of everyday goods and handicrafts.

The Mekong promenade is a popular spot with residents, especially in the late afternoon. They exercise, meet friends, or watch the sunset over the Mekong. The market and promenade offer different impressions: daily trade on one hand, and activity, encounters, and river views on the other. If you are choosing Savannakhet for its distinctive urban character, these two places can help shape your focus.

Architecture and a Local Specialty

Almost 200 notable buildings in colonial, Art Deco, or Lao architectural styles have been identified in Savannakhet. These styles offer a sense of the city’s architectural diversity, without limiting it to a single period or building type.

Savannakhet is also known for a local specialty: Sin Savanh consists of strips of dried beef sprinkled with sesame seeds. Alongside the food on offer at the market, this specialty provides another glimpse of everyday local life. It adds a specific dish to your impression of the city, while the architecture conveys its built character.

In Savannakhet Province: Temples, Handicrafts, and Festivals

Savannakhet Province lies on the Mekong, opposite Thailand’s Mukdahan Province. Vat Xaiyaphoume is the oldest Buddhist temple in Savannakhet; its original founding dates back to 1542. That Ing Hang, an important pilgrimage site for Lao and Thai Buddhists, is also in the province. The stupa is about nine meters high and adorned with intricate carvings and decorations. You can get there by tuk-tuk, bicycle, or motorcycle; availability depends on local transport options.

Heuan Hin is a pre-Angkorian stone building on the Mekong, about 40 kilometers downstream from the city. On January 29, 2026, the National Heritage Department recognized Heuan Hin Stone Castle as a national heritage site. The province’s French colonial heritage also includes St. Theresa’s Catholic Church and numerous colonial shophouses in Kaysone Phomvihanh Town.

Handicrafts are represented at the Lao Silk-Cotton Weaving Centre in Ban Nongkadeang, in Vilabouly District. The center offers bags, shirts, Lao skirts, and Lao silk. Festivals also provide a distinct seasonal context: the Heuan Hin Stone Castle Festival is held annually and promotes traditional arts, culture, and customs. The That Ing Hang Festival is usually celebrated in December on the full moon; its exact date varies with the lunar calendar. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the date for the year in question.

Wetlands and Landscape

The Xe Champhone Wetlands in Champhone District is the largest of Laos’s two Ramsar sites. It is home to great aquatic biodiversity, one of the last remaining populations of endangered Siamese crocodiles, as well as endangered turtle species and wetland birds. At the Xe Champhone Wetland and Crocodile Information Center in Tansoum, information panels and murals introduce visitors to the wetlands and their wildlife.

A different landscape defines the Phu Xang Hae National Protected Area: a steep sandstone slope and extensive sandstone outcrops. Together with the wetland, it shows how varied the province’s landscapes are. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus mainly on the city of Savannakhet or also explore cultural and landscape attractions elsewhere in the province.
