Looking for a hotel in Ban Cat? The wider destination of Oudomxay provides additional regional context. Its nature and cultural attractions offer different focuses for planning your trip—from waterfalls and hikes to temples and traditional textile work.

Nature and trails in Oudomxay

Nam Kat Yorlapa is located in the Phou Hi Phi provincial protected forest in Xay District. A Lao News Agency report from March 2025 lists forest trekking, hiking, waterfall visits, ATV rides, and bridge crossings among the activities in the area, including the well-known Tovi Bridge. It also mentions climbing a spider web, ziplining, and panoramic views of Tor-Hin Mountain. This gives you different themes to choose from based on your interests: sightseeing, hiking, and driving or zipline activities.

The waterfalls also differ in their form and access conditions. Tad Nam Haeng consists of three successive cascades, approximately 13, 8, and 5 meters high. After four kilometers on a paved road, access continues along a gravel and red-earth road, which is passable only in the dry season. At Nam Kat Yorlapa, the route consists of five kilometers on a paved road to Ban Bo, followed by 18 kilometers on a gravel road to Ban Fan and about 900 meters on foot to the waterfall. These details show different route profiles: an explicitly seasonal road restriction and a route divided into three sections.

Nam Hin Lake offers a different scale of scenery: it is the largest reservoir in Oudomxay, covers about 121.7 square kilometers, and spans seven villages. Several streams converge there. While Tad Nam Haeng is defined by its three cascades, Nam Hin Lake is characterized by its expansive area and the streams flowing together. The Upper Lao Mekong Important Bird Area in Oudomxay covers 10,980 hectares, adding a broader regional dimension to the nature-focused attractions.

Cultural sites and crafts in Oudomxay

The Tai Lue Handicrafts Center is located in Phasak village in Xay District and is part of the “One District, One Product” initiative. A Lao News Agency report from March 2025 describes its focus on traditional textile handicrafts and lists Lao skirts, shirts, fabrics, bags, and baskets.

There is also a biodiversity museum in the Nam Kat Yorlapa area. A Lao News Agency report from March 2025 says that it attracts visitors from Laos and abroad, particularly during major festivals and on weekends.

Religious sites offer another focus. The Phra That Xaymoungkun Lattanamingmuong stupa, also known as Wat Phu That, is located in the center of Xay town; its grounds include three small hills arranged in a row. A Lao News Agency report from March 2025 describes the site as a revered religious place in Oudomxay. Wat Phra Chao Sing Kham temple is located on Phou Khao Khwai in Viengkham village, La District. It is more than 2,000 years old; most people in Laos believe it is sacred.

Caves and waterways as further destinations

Chom Ong Cave is located in the village of the same name in Xay District, about 45 kilometers from Xay town. A shortcut trail about two kilometers long leads from the village through the rice fields; alternatively, there is a road passable by vehicles. For planning purposes, this gives you two different access options: a walking route through the fields and a route by vehicle.

Nam Lot Phou is located in Na Thong village in Na Mo District, about eight kilometers from the district center; the access road branches off Route 13 North. The water is considered naturally formed, clean, and cool, and suitable for swimming and enjoying the natural scenery. Oudomxay is also important for understanding the wider region: it is considered a transport hub in northern Laos, and the road from Luang Prabang northward passes through Oudomxay.
