Khammuan: Caves, Karst and Culture
Accommodation in Khammuan
Khammuan combines impressive cave landscapes with natural and cultural heritage. In Hin Nam No National Park, pristine rainforests meet waterfalls and complex cave systems. In 2025, the park was inscribed together with Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park as a transboundary World Heritage natural site. Individual caves also show the diversity of the landscape in Khammouane Province.
River Caves and Rock Formations
Xe Bang Fai Cave is a large river cave that the Xe Bang Fai River has carved through limestone mountains over millions of years. It lies in the lush protected area and limestone karst region of Boualapha District. Kong Lor Cave is located in Phu Hin Bun National Park in Khoun Kham District. Boat services and local guide services at the cave provide direct income for local people.
Nang Aen Cave and Xiang Liap Cave also offer different experiences. At Nang Aen Cave, stairs lead up and down, allowing visitors to view the natural rock formations. The cave is in Thakhek District, 18 kilometres northeast of Thakhek town on National Road 12. Xiang Liap Cave is about 14 kilometres northeast of Thakhek District, near Xiang Liap village on Route 12. Its entrance is 30 metres high. Route 12 is relevant to both location descriptions, but the distances refer to different points of reference in Thakhek. Check current road conditions before setting out.
Nature and Hiking
Xe Bang Fai Cave connects the river that carved it with the karst landscape of Boualapha District. Kong Lor Cave offers a different natural setting within Phu Hin Bun National Park. These location references can help you understand the caves not only by their shape, but also by their position within protected areas.
Phou Pha Marn is in Khounkham District and is considered the highest point, as well as a gateway to Phou Hin Boun National Protected Area. The site is also an important stop on the Thakhek Loop itinerary. Tad Sieng Leu is within the national protected area in Khammuan and is considered a particularly important destination for people who enjoy hiking. Alongside cave visits, hiking interests and the landscapes of protected areas can therefore be possible focuses for your trip.
Culture and History
Tham Pa Fa Cave, also known as Buddha Cave, is an important cultural and religious landmark in Khammouane Province. Another cultural occasion is the That Sikhottabong Festival, held annually in the third lunar month, with calendar dates varying from one lunar year to another. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific festival dates for the year in question.
The Phou Tai people of Khammouane are associated with traditional handicrafts and are known for their careful weaving. Historical remains also shape some places: in local areas of Boualapha District, the Ho Chi Minh Trail includes bomb craters, remnants of weapons and old marching routes. Access restrictions may apply in some areas.
When looking for a hotel in Khammuan, it can help to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: caves and karst, hiking, cultural heritage or the festival each offer different starting points. The places described are associated with different place names and districts.
