Pakxong: Coffee and Waterfalls in the Surrounding Area
Accommodation in Pakxong
When traveling to Pakxong, you can plan around two specific themes: nearby waterfalls and coffee experiences in the region.
Waterfalls near Pakxong
Tad Fane Waterfall is located in Dong Hua Sao National Park on the Bolaven Plateau, near Pakxong. There, two rivers converge to form two waterfalls, each 120 meters high. Tad Yeung offers a different kind of visitor experience: viewing platforms and other visitor facilities are intended to make the area more accessible to visitors. Check the current visiting conditions before your trip.
The two waterfalls give the landscape distinct characteristics: at Tad Fane, the twin falls are the main attraction, while at Tad Yeung, viewing platforms and other visitor facilities are part of the described visitor setting. When planning, you can decide whether to focus mainly on the waterfalls themselves or also include the viewpoints.
Coffee and regional routes
Coffee tourism in Champasak Province includes tours and cafés in and around the town of Paksong. At Mr Koffie, guided tours of a coffee plantation are offered, followed by tastings. Check in advance whether a tour is available at the time of your visit. It adds a firsthand look at coffee cultivation and coffee tasting to the landscape experience.
Further afield in the region, a small loop route of about 200 kilometers runs through Pakse, Ban Huayhe, Paksong, Thatheng, Ban Beng (Tad Lo), and Katu village. It can be traveled in either direction. The loop is therefore an option for a trip with several stops; it should not be confused with a route within Pakxong. As road conditions may change, check them before setting out.
Champasak: Culture and Nature in the Wider Destination
In the wider destination of Champasak, the cultural landscape, including the Wat Phou temple complex, offers a cultural perspective alongside the nature and coffee themes around Pakxong. The planned landscape is more than 1,000 years old and developed from the 5th to the 15th century. Along an axis from the mountain summit to the riverbank, temples, shrines, and waterworks extend for about 10 kilometers.
Dong Houa Sao National Protected Area is also part of the wider destination of Champasak. From Nong Luang, visitors can hike and camp in the protected area. Tree Top Explorer is located there and combines trekking with ziplines, treetop walkways, and a via ferrata. Most attractions in the protected area can be reached via Route 16E. It runs from Pakse to Paksong and the Bolaven Plateau through the provinces of Champasak and Salavanh. Check current access and route conditions, as well as local guide arrangements, in advance.
