Gulcha was Kurmanjan Datka’s headquarters and the de facto capital of the Alai region she governed. The town can also serve as a rest stop on the way to Erkeshtam and may be relevant when planning your trip.

Kurmanjan Datka and the Museum

The Kurmanjan Datka Museum of History and Ethnography is dedicated to the life and times of Kurmanjan Datka. It is housed in a yurt-shaped building on the outskirts of Gulcha.

Exhibition topics include Kyrgyz life, personal belongings of Alymbek and Kurmanjan Datka, and digitized photographs of the two. The personal belongings and images show different aspects of the subject. Which exhibits are currently on display may change; check the current exhibition before visiting.

Crafts in the Alay Travel Region

In the Alay travel region, kurak, terme, and embroidery are among the crafts made by local women artisans. Silverwork by local artisans is also part of the region’s crafts. The motifs mentioned therefore range from kurak and terme to embroidery and silverwork, offering insight into a variety of regional craft traditions.

A personal detail about local crafts can be found at Ainura’s Guest House Alay near Gulcha: the house is decorated with artworks by the host’s mother-in-law, who is a Kyrgyz craftswoman. For travelers interested in handcrafted design, this is a specific feature of the guesthouse.

Routes and Travel Planning

Gulcha is on a regional highway route connecting Osh, Sary-Mogol, Daroot-Korgon, and Karamyk. The town can also serve as a rest stop on the way to Erkeshtam. Route conditions and transport options may change; check them before your trip.

Planning a transit stop differs from planning a multi-day tour: for a drive, the route and transport are important considerations, while a tour also involves duration, overnight stays, and activities.

The five-day Truly Nomadic Land Horse Trek begins after a drive from Osh to Gulcha along the Pamir Highway. The drive therefore takes place before the trek begins. The tour includes four nights in yurts with Kyrgyz host families, as well as a demonstration of milking and making dairy products from horse and cow milk. The tour route and included activities may change; check the itinerary before booking.

Guesthouses and Capacity

Clara’s Guest House Alay can accommodate up to ten people in four rooms. A large garden yurt is used for dining and relaxing. The washing facilities are indoors; the toilet building is separate.

Ainura’s Guest House Alay is near Gulcha. It has four indoor sleeping places and 16 places in two outdoor yurts. In addition to its location and sleeping places, its decoration with artworks by the host’s mother-in-law is another feature of this guesthouse.

The capacity details are presented differently: for Clara’s, the maximum occupancy and number of rooms are given, while Ainura’s sleeping places are divided between the indoor area and outdoor yurts. When comparing them, consider which type of sleeping place is relevant to your plans. Capacity, amenities, and interior details may change; check these and availability before booking.
