Discover West Kazakhstan
Accommodation in West Kazakhstan
West Kazakhstan brings together rivers and lakes, protected areas, historic buildings, and archaeological sites. It is considered the only region of Kazakhstan located almost entirely in Europe. When planning your hotel stay, it helps to decide first whether you want to focus on Uralsk’s urban history, Lake Shalkar, or activities such as horseback riding and fishing.
Landscapes Between Lowlands and Sand Massifs
The landscape encompasses the Caspian Lowland, the foothills of the General Syrt and the Pre-Ural Plateau, and the Narynkum sand massifs. The Ural, also called the Zhaiyk, is the region’s main waterway. Other rivers include the Saryozen, Karaozen, Kaldygayty, Olenty, Buldurty, and Shyngyrlau. Major lakes include Shalkar, Aralsor, Botkol, Zhaltyrkol, and Sulukol.
Lake Shalkar lies in Terekti District and is considered one of Kazakhstan’s valuable natural sites because of its ecosystem, history, and landscape. Bird populations found there include swans, geese, ducks, flamingos, and gulls. The water is considered salty chloride-sodium mineral water and contains calcium bicarbonate, magnesium, and other minerals.
Two large protected areas extend across the districts of Bokeiorda, Zhanibek, Kaztalov, and Zhangala. The Bokeiorda State Nature Reserve covers 343,040.1 hectares and was established to protect the habitat of the Ural saiga population. The Ashchiozek State Nature Reserve covers 314,504.1 hectares. Bokeiorda is larger in area, while both reserves are of a similar overall scale.
Uralsk: Riverside Setting, Houses, and Museums
Uralsk lies on the right bank of the Ural and the left bank of the Chagan. The city preserves numerous 19th-century buildings, including the Vanushin Merchant House, the Pugachev House Museum, the Red Mosque, and the Karev House. Those interested in urban history and architecture will find a different perspective on the region here than at its lakes or in its protected areas.
West Kazakhstan offers access to 25 museums. These include the Khan Ordasy Historical, Cultural, Architectural, and Ethnographic Museum-Reserve, the Zhaiyk Settlement Museum-Reserve, and the West Kazakhstan Regional Museum of History and Local Lore, which has 18 branches. Uralsk also has a Pushkin Museum. Khan Ordasy is considered an important historical and cultural site in West Kazakhstan; 16 sites within the museum-reserve are protected as historical and cultural monuments at the national level.
The Regional Museum of History and Local Lore has a history spanning almost two centuries. It is housed in a building constructed in 1879, originally used as a Russian-Kazakh school and designated an architectural monument. The archaeology hall presents the region’s early history through finds from the Kyryk Oba and Segizsai burial grounds.
Archaeological Traces and Historical Context
Archaeological sites beyond the museums also offer insight into the region’s past. The Taksay mound complex in Terekti District is a significant archaeological monument from the Sarmatian period. Three burial mounds at the Segizsai (Lebedevka) complex were examined as part of archaeological research. Finds from the excavations are attributed to Sarmatian tribes of the 2nd to 3rd centuries BC.
The Archaeology Museum of the West Kazakhstan University of Innovation and Technology features exhibit dioramas and tombs arranged according to archaeological chronology. The exhibits also include a model of the fortress wall of a medieval settlement. These different displays—from the burial mound complex to the settlement model—offer several ways to explore the archaeological history of West Kazakhstan.
Horseback Riding, Fishing, and Tours
At the Sayat Ethno-Tourism Center, visitors can learn horsemanship, take part in traditional equestrian sports, and go on educational excursions into the local natural environment. The center therefore focuses on both horse-related activities and nature. Summer and winter fishing are also established visitor activities in the region. The Dongelek Fisherman’s House and the Sayat Recreation Base are facilities associated with fishing; Sayat has nine piers on a lake and the Ural.
A two-day jeep tour in Chingirlau District includes the Akkum Desert, the Aydarly and Toryatbasy mountains, and Kunyskerey Cave. The region’s food culture offers another point of interest: West Kazakhstan is associated with fishbarmak, a version of the national dish made with fish.
