When searching for a hotel in Shymkent, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. The destinations featured here range from excavated historical sites and museum collections to a zoo and a landscaped pedestrian area. This lets you shape your plans around the topics that interest you most, rather than treating every place as the same kind of destination.

Archaeological Sites and Exhibitions

At Shym Qala, excavated historical remains stand alongside exhibition spaces. These include a blacksmith’s workshop and a residential house from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as a pre-Christian temple with evidence of Zoroastrian rituals. There are also exhibitions in the citadel and an exhibition about the underground fortress. This focus encompasses both tangible historical structures and displays about other parts of the fortress. If you are particularly interested in early history and archaeological remains, Shym Qala is a distinct point of interest to include in your travel plans.

Museums and Their Different Themes

The galleries of the Shymkent Museum Association focus on the ancient history of the steppe, sacred heritage, economic and social life, and the cultures of the peoples of Kazakhstan. The collection at the Shymkent Museum of Local History ranges from natural history, archaeology, metalwork and fine art to photographic documents, weapons, wooden objects, newspapers, and wool and cotton products. This makes it possible to distinguish between different interests: art and archaeology have a different emphasis from natural history, photography or craft collections. The layout of the museum galleries may change when they are rearranged. If you want to visit a specific subject area, check the current offerings beforehand.

The Hakim Abai Museum is located in Abai Park. Its offerings include guided tours, video screenings, lectures and open lessons on Abai’s work. Unlike the wide-ranging collection areas of other museums, this museum focuses on a single body of work and how it is presented. If this is of particular interest to you, check which formats are currently offered before your visit; individual programs may change.

Traditions, the Zoo and Urban Spaces

The Center of Customs and Traditions opened in December 2014 and was the first center of its kind in the Republic. Its work includes research and methodological work on national traditions and customs. Its focus is therefore on the systematic study of traditions, rather than on the types of objects found in a museum.

The Shymkent Zoo is said to have been founded in 1979; its official opening took place on April 29, 1980. The site covers 54 hectares, of which 34 hectares are taken up by the exhibition area. This area is landscaped with ornamental and fruit trees as well as hybrid tea roses. The two figures refer to different areas: 54 hectares is the zoo as a whole, while 34 hectares refers to the exhibition area. This lets you distinguish the size of the entire site from that of the landscaped area.

The 50-meter-high Altyn Eye Ferris wheel offers panoramic views of the modern Shymkent City district. If a ride is important to your plans, check in advance whether it is currently operating. Arbat, by contrast, is a pedestrian area on Beybitshilik Avenue and a cultural and social urban space. Its design is characterized by wide, landscaped avenues and flowerbeds. The comparison highlights two different perspectives: the Ferris wheel is about the panoramic view, while Arbat is about the design of a public pedestrian area.
