Atyrau offers a variety of options for planning your trip: museums and monuments offer insights into history and art, parks and beaches each have their own appeal, and activities on the Ural include boat trips and SUP. Which ones you include depends on whether you are looking for culture, outdoor recreation or activities on the water.

Museums and Monuments

At the Atyrau Regional History and Local Lore Museum, dedicated galleries cover archaeology, ethnography, regional history from the 12th to the 20th century, modern history, culture and literature. The collection comprises 52,720 objects; this figure may change as updates are made. Notable exhibits include a jug found in Sarayshyk bearing a verse fragment from the 13th century, attributed to Zhusup Balasaguni.

The Atyrau Regional Museum of Art and Applied Arts, named after S. Sariyev, has more than 1,200 exhibits. Works by well-known Kazakh painters are displayed in eight galleries; the number of items in the collection may change. Monuments also shape Atyrau’s cultural landscape: in Victory Park, the Eternal Flame Memorial, built in 2000, is shaped like a five-pointed iron star. It stands in a paved avenue covering one hectare.

Parks and Beaches

The city’s green spaces offer different facilities for spending time outdoors. Retro Park features a 1950s neoclassical design and includes an amphitheatre, a café, an exhibition pavilion, musical and illuminated fountains, and an artificial pond. Otbasi Park has walking paths, children’s playgrounds, fountains, sports courts and cycling paths. Facilities available at each park may change; check what is available before your visit if needed.

The two beaches also offer different experiences. Central City Beach is near the city centre and has sun loungers, umbrellas, showers, toilets, food areas and designated safe swimming zones. Munayshi Beach is on the outskirts of the city and offers water sports. As facilities at Central City Beach and the water sports available may change, it is a good idea to check what is currently on offer in advance.

Activities on the Ural and Kazakh Cuisine

Steamboat operators on the Ural organise individual and group trips, including morning, evening and full-day tours. Availability and departure times may vary by season; check the schedule when planning your trip. SUP is also available along the banks of the Ural. Operators provide boards, paddles and life jackets, as well as an introduction for beginners; this activity may also vary by season.

For a meal featuring Kazakh cuisine, Sarqyt Restaurant is another option in Atyrau. Its Kazakh dishes include meat, baursaks, kumys and shubat. The culturally themed interior is complemented by handicrafts and clothing in the national style.

Nature and History in the Atyrau Region

The Atyrau region has its own natural and cultural attractions, distinct from what the city has to offer. The Akzhaiyk State Nature Reserve is located where the Ural flows into the Caspian Sea and covers 341,000 hectares. Four ecological routes have been approved in the reserve. One of them, “World of the Steppe,” combines transport, hiking and cycling: it is 34 kilometres long and takes four hours and ten minutes. A total of 292 bird species have also been recorded in the reserve, including 26 species listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book.

Saraishyk is another part of the region’s history. In the 13th century, the settlement was an important political, commercial and cultural centre on the Silk Road, as well as a major centre of the Golden Horde and the Kazakh Khanate. The Saraishyk State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve preserves more than 50,000 archaeological, ethnographic and natural history exhibits, including finds from excavations.

The Kigash River in Kurmangazy District is among the region’s natural attractions; the world’s rare lotus grows there. The river is also a popular spot for recreational fishing, which is possible year-round. These regional nature and history highlights complement the picture of Atyrau, but are distinct from the city’s facilities and activities described above.
