Krong Pailin offers two distinct travel focuses: ancient structures on Phnom Yat and nature destinations in and around Pailin. Pailin lies in a valley. Understanding the geography can also help with planning your trip: some destinations are in Pailin, others in the surrounding area, while Steung Kuy is part of the wider region. This helps you distinguish between local structures, nearby natural areas, and a destination farther afield.

Phnom Yat: Pagoda and Other Structures

An old pagoda stands on Phnom Yat in Pailin, built on the hill by the Kola in 1922. The many old structures there include large and small stupas, as well as asroms, hermitages for meditation. The pagoda gives the hill a specific historical connection; the other structures show that it is more than just a single building. The summit can be reached on foot or by vehicle. A staircase with 242 steps was completed on October 13, 1998. Check current conditions before your visit if you plan to use this route.

A Landmark and a Place to Swim

Wat Gohng-Kahng has Pailin’s frequently photographed landmark gate. Travelers arriving by road from Battambang see it. As a standalone landmark, the gate differs from the many structures on Phnom Yat; it offers another point of reference for exploring Pailin.

Another activity is swimming in the river that flows down from Goh-Ay Mountain in Pailin. Visitors can swim there. Check current access and conditions before your visit if you plan to do so. Unlike the structures, the river offers an opportunity for a water-based activity.

Nature Destinations in the Surrounding Area

Kbal O'Chra is a nature and wildlife conservation area near Pailin and a tourist attraction. It is about five kilometers from the provincial capital of Pailin. O'Tavao is about five kilometers from Pailin and is considered a natural area with attractive scenery; water flows from Phnom Khieu there. The two approximate distances help place these locations in the surrounding area, but they refer to different points of reference: Kbal O'Chra is measured from the provincial capital, while O'Tavao is measured from Pailin. They also differ in character: Kbal O'Chra focuses on nature and wildlife conservation, while O'Tavao is known for its landscape and water.

Steung Kuy, a nature and wildlife conservation area in Phnom Kuy village, in Sangkat Sala Krau and Sala Krau District, lies farther afield in the wider region. It is about 20 kilometers from the provincial capital. Steung Kuy is therefore a regional point of reference, not a destination near Pailin. For trip planning, this creates a geographical distinction: Kbal O'Chra and O'Tavao are nearby, while Steung Kuy is part of the wider regional context. This distinction can help you choose a suitable scope for your travel plans.
