Hachijo – Volcanic Island, Coast and Culture
Accommodation in Hachijo
Hachijō Jima is a volcanic island in the Fuji volcanic belt. Geographically, two mountains define the island: Mihara lies in the southeast and Hachijō Fuji in the northwest. This arrangement gives the landscape a distinctive shape and offers a first introduction to Hachijo’s natural and cultural themes. If you’re planning a trip, the different places and activities can help you decide what to focus on.
Volcanic Landscape and Plant Life
At Kurozuna, the volcanic landscape takes a distinctive form: the dune is made of black scoria and lies on the outer edge of Mihara, along steep sea cliffs. From there, you can enjoy views of Kashitate and Otochiyogahama. Kurozuna thus combines a striking geological feature with views of two named places.
The Hachijō Botanical Park offers a different perspective on nature. It covers more than 20 hectares and includes tropical and subtropical plants as well as numerous birds. The island’s volcanic formations are therefore complemented by diverse plant and bird life as distinct natural attractions.
History and Cultural Traditions
The Hattori Residence is the former estate of the Hattori family, who managed the shogunate’s ships during the Edo period. The residence is also associated with performances of Kashitate dance and Hachijō Taiko. Here, a specific family history meets two named performance traditions.
The HachijĹŤ History and Folklore Museum offers a different historical perspective. It occupies the former building of the HachijĹŤ branch office of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, built in 1939. Its architectural history differs from that of the former family estate: here, the focus is on a former government building, while the Hattori Residence is the family estate.
Mountain and Coast: Different Ways to Experience the Island
At HachijĹŤ Fuji, a hiking trail leads up the mountain. For those interested in this part of the landscape, it offers a specific focus on mountain hiking. HachijĹŤ Jima also has surf spots, so surfing is another part of the island experience alongside the climb.
The coastal spots described here each have a different focus. Otochiyogahama has pools and small ponds where visitors can play along the rocky coast. A coastal area in ĹŚgagĹŤ, on the other hand, is considered a good place for fishing along the rocky coast. It also offers views of HachijĹŤ Kojima and striking sunsets. When planning, you can choose between playing by the water, fishing and enjoying the scenery at each location.
An agricultural visit can also be part of your trip: Umi-kaze Shiitake offers tours and harvesting experiences by prior reservation. If you’d like to include this activity in your plans, making a reservation is a practical requirement.
