Discover Yaita: Azaleas, Tradition and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Yaita
Yaita offers several different reasons to stay: Nagamine Park with its azaleas, local produce, an annual festival at Kihata Shrine and Oshiraji Waterfall. If you’re looking for hotels in Yaita, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your trip. Each of the destinations below offers a different experience—from a visit to a park to an event in October or an outing involving a drive followed by a walk.
Nagamine Park: Azaleas and a Family Walk
Nagamine Park is located about 700 meters north of JR Yaita Station. The grounds are home to around 5,000 azaleas. The city describes the park as a symbolic place for “Yaita, the Land of Azaleas”; it is also popular with local residents. Its significance is reflected both in its plants and in its local symbolism. The lawn and playground equipment make it well suited to family walks. When planning your trip, you can therefore start with an interest in the azaleas or a family walk in the park.
An Annual Festival in October
The Kihata Shrine Festival is held in the town of Yaita every year on the second Sunday in October. A procession of more than 100 participants dressed as warriors makes its way through the surrounding area. If the festival is the reason for your trip, its recurring date gives you a specific point to plan around. Check which date falls on the second Sunday in October in your chosen year before making your travel plans.
Apples and Regional Cuisine
Apples from Yaita are distinctive because the fruit is allowed to fully ripen on the tree. They can still be purchased after the apple-picking season ends, and visitors are encouraged to come early. If you’re planning to buy local apples, keep both the seasonal timing and the recommendation to come early in mind.
One place to eat is Tsutsujitei, a country-style restaurant at the Yaita service area. It serves homemade traditional dishes prepared with local ingredients. The Shunsen Yaita farm shop sells fresh agricultural produce, especially vegetables, as well as processed products. So local offerings include not only meals to enjoy on-site but also agricultural products to take home.
Oshiraji Waterfall: Conditions and Route
At Oshiraji Waterfall in the town of Yaita, the water can appear especially blue under certain conditions. When water levels are low, the waterfall may temporarily disappear entirely. From Yamanoeki, drive for about seven minutes toward Nasushiobara to reach a parking area. From there, walk for about seven minutes along a mountain trail to the waterfall. Take seasonal road closures into account and check local conditions before setting out.
City Library and Hotel Search
Yaita City Library offers media borrowing and reservations, as well as catalog searches. If you’d like to use one of these services during your stay, check the latest information before visiting, as library services may change.
Nagamine Park is about 700 meters north of JR Yaita Station. These different points of interest can help you tailor your search to your specific plans rather than treating all the destinations as similar activities. Check the conditions listed for each hotel and choose your search focus to match your plans.
