Yaizu: Port, Culture and Museums
Accommodation in Yaizu
Yaizu offers several distinct starting points for a trip: the fishing port, religious traditions, museums of cultural history and exhibits about Suruga Bay. The focus of your trip can help you choose a hotel in Yaizu. Consider whether port-themed sights, shrine traditions, museum topics or marine life best suit your planned stay.
Port and maritime themes
Yaizu Wave & Katsuobell is located in Fisshuna Waterfront Park at Yaizu Fishing Port. The monument features a large heart-shaped design made of white waves, as well as a bell monument shaped like a bonito head. The shape of the waves and the form of the fish create two different focal points within the monument and visually connect it to the port.
Bicycle rentals at the station
Bicycles can be rented at the south exit of Yaizu Station; electric bicycles are available exclusively through the tourism association. If you are considering an e-bike for your plans, the tourism association is the specific point of contact.
Yaizu Shrine and its festival
Yaizu Shrine is said to have been founded more than 1,600 years ago; its principal deity is Yamato Takeru. The main festival traditionally takes place on August 12 and 13. The founding tradition and festival dates serve different purposes for visitors: the former places the shrine in its historical context, while the latter provides a specific reference point for choosing when to travel. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the dates for the year of your visit.
Two museums of cultural history
The Yaizu History and Folklore Museum displays materials about the Fifth Fukuryu Maru. The Yaizu Koizumi Yakumo Memorial Museum displays items associated with Koizumi Yakumo and explains why he chose Yaizu as a place to recuperate. The difference lies in their focus: one museum looks at the Fifth Fukuryu Maru, while the other connects its collection to Koizumi Yakumo’s biographical ties to Yaizu. This distinction can help you choose based on whether you are interested in a specific subject or in Koizumi Yakumo’s connection to Yaizu.
Picture books and toys
The Tarntokuru Children's Hall combines a picture book library and a toy museum, each with a different focus: the Yaizu Picture Book Library has about 7,000 books, while the Yaizu Toy Museum offers a playful way to experience Yaizu’s significance and the warmth of wood. The book collection and playful interpretation provide two different ways to explore the same building.
The deep sea and fishing history in Yaizu City
Two facilities in Yaizu City offer different ways to explore Suruga Bay. The UmiShiru exhibition room features deep-sea creatures from the bay and fish from coastal waters. The Deep Sea Water Museum uses videos, exhibit panels and tanks containing deep-sea creatures to present the deep sea of Suruga Bay. Their thematic scope differs: UmiShiru brings together deep-sea creatures and coastal fish, while the Deep Sea Water Museum explores the deep sea through several types of exhibits. Hamadori offers a historical perspective on fishing: in Yaizu City, it is considered the birthplace of Yaizu’s fishing industry.
