Taketa offers several ways to explore cultural history: the past of the 岡藩, the residence of the literary figure 田能村竹田, a history museum, and the castle town’s seasonal traditions. When planning your trip, you can decide which of these themes to focus on: Would you mainly like to learn about historic buildings, get to know an important figure, or explore the town’s history through festivals and traditional stories?

Historic Buildings and Their Uses

The 御客屋敷, also known as 御使者屋, was an institution of the 岡藩. It served as accommodation for members of other domains who held at least the rank of samurai, functioning as a guesthouse for official visitors. This role distinguishes it from the 旧竹田荘, which served as the samurai residence of the literary figure 田能村竹田: the 御客屋敷 centered on hosting official guests, while the 旧竹田荘 is associated with a particular individual. The 御客屋敷 was designated a municipal historic site in 1972.

The approximately 200-year-old building of the 御客屋敷 is home to the café 三日月珈琲店ー月鐘楼ー. It serves coffee and curry lunches. In this way, the site brings together its former use as a guesthouse of the 岡藩 and a present-day food and drink offering. Check the café’s current operating details before your visit.

Residence and History Museum

The 旧竹田荘 was the samurai residence of the literary figure 田能村竹田 and was designated a national historic site in 1948. From there, you can enjoy a broad view of the castle town to the north. The 旧竹田荘 was renovated in April 2021; since then, it has offered more detailed information as a facility dedicated to 田能村竹田. The 竹田市歴史文化館 opened in October 2020 and is connected to the 旧竹田荘 by an elevator. Its opening preceded the renovation the following year.

The 竹田市歴史文化館・由学館 brings together the 岡城跡ガイダンスセンター, a municipal gallery, and a history museum. The facility introduces ways to explore 岡城跡 and the historic castle town. As a specialist museum, it focuses on 豊後岡藩 and 田能村竹田. Its subject matter thus ranges from the history of the domain to the literary figure; the connected 旧竹田荘 adds the perspective of his former residence and more detailed information.

Castle Town and Seasonal Traditions

A legend associated with 岡城跡 says that the castle was built to welcome 源義経. This traditional story adds to the site’s architectural and biographical themes. Along the 歴史の道 in Taketa’s castle town, historic samurai residences line the route; surviving white walls and temples bear witness to the town’s former heyday.

The seasons also bring different cultural highlights: in spring, 雛まつり celebrations enliven the castle town, while in winter, 竹楽 bamboo lanterns do so. If one of these traditions is important to your trip plans, check the specific event dates before you travel.
