Tsugawa brings together the history of an important river port, a distinctive riverside landscape, and a local fox wedding tradition. This gives you several points of interest for your trip to Aga: historic sites, guided tours, and a festival rooted in local legend. You can plan around whichever of these aspects interests you most.

Tsugawa as a Historic River Port

During the Edo period, Tsugawa was the western gateway to the Aizu domain and an important transshipment point for transport by land and water. Its location where the land route met river shipping shaped the town’s role as a transportation hub.

Up to 150 sailing ships called at the Ofunato landing, also known as Ofunaba, where 100 porters worked. This is why Tsugawa was described as one of Japan’s three most important river ports. These figures and the historical designation give an indication of the volume of goods once handled there. A guided tour of the river port focuses on this earlier chapter of Tsugawa’s history.

Castle Ruins, Shiroyama, and River Views

The ruins of Tsugawa Castle lie on Shiroyama, a 140-meter-high ridge that projects like a peninsula at the confluence of the Agano and Tokonami rivers. The castle ruins are now laid out as Kirinzan Park. From the former main castle grounds, where Kanagami Inari Shrine stands, you can look out over Tsugawa and the Agano River.

Here, the landscape meets the town’s historic layout: the confluence defines the location of the castle hill, while the view from the former main castle grounds takes in the town and one of the two rivers. A guided Kirinzan course offers a different focus from the tour of the former river port. Winter conditions may affect the Kirinzan course, so take this into account when planning.

The Fox Wedding Procession and Local Tradition

The Tsugawa Fox Wedding Procession is based on a foxfire legend passed down in Tsugawa. The imaginative festival reenacts a nighttime wedding ceremony from the Edo period. During the procession, a bride wearing makeup parades through the streets of Tsugawa with about 108 attendants. The number of attendants may vary from one edition to another.

This sets the festival apart from the historic sites: its focus is a local legend and its staging as a nighttime procession. Event dates are announced separately. If you plan to time your trip around the festival, check the latest announcement in advance.

Guided Tours and Practical Details

Guided tours of Tsugawa last about one and a half to two hours. The three courses cover different themes: one explores Tsugawa’s past as a river port, another focuses on food and the town’s narrow lanes, and a third visits the mountain grounds on the Kirinzan course. You can choose a focus based on your interest in local history, the lanes and food, or the landscape.

Reservations for guided tours are generally required at least one week in advance. Check the current booking conditions as part of your planning. Fox Wedding House offers fox makeup as a hands-on experience; the price is 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children. Availability and fees may change, so it is worth checking before your visit.

From the second floor of Fox Wedding House, you can enjoy views of the Agano River, the Tokonami River, and Kirinzan. Around the house in the Tsugawa area, visitors can find local specialties to take home as souvenirs and enjoy traditional dishes. Individual businesses and offerings may change.
