Discover Chino: Culture and Regional Experiences
Accommodation in Chino
Chino offers cultural sites and leisure activities in a variety of forms. At JR Chino Station, you can see raw obsidian and ceramics; at the west exit, Dogū figurines are displayed in 茅野駅前縄文公園. The town also offers a hands-on activity requiring reservations, poetry monuments around a waterfall, a tasting of kanten, and a park with a slide and barbecue area. The options range from viewing and creating things yourself to culinary and recreational activities.
Culture at the Station and West Exit
Raw obsidian from the Reizan area at the foot of the Yatsugatake Mountains is on display on platforms 2 and 3 of JR Chino Station. Authentic ceramic vessels can be seen in front of the Chino City Tourist Information Center, located on the second floor of the station building モンエイトビル. The displays highlight different aspects: the raw obsidian is identified by its material and place of origin, while the authenticity of the ceramics is emphasized.
茅野駅前縄文公園 is located at the west exit of Chino Station. Two bronze casts of Dogū figurines designated as National Treasures of Japan are displayed there. You can take souvenir photos in front of the figures and touch them. The park also offers concrete ways to engage with the displayed figures in person.
Create Your Own Jōmon-Themed Items
At 尖石縄文考古館 in Chino, individual visitors can make clay rattles, ceramics, or Dogū figurines with advance reservations. Dogū designs include 縄文のビーナス and 仮面の女神. Here, creating something yourself is the focus: rather than simply choosing an object to view, you can make one of the items on offer.
You can experience Jōmon themes in two different ways: at 茅野駅前縄文公園, bronze casts are displayed, and you can take souvenir photos in front of them and touch them; at 尖石縄文考古館, individual visitors can make items themselves with a reservation. This distinction between displayed objects and hands-on activities can help you choose cultural activities for your visit.
Literature, Kanten, and Leisure Activities
Around Tamehime Waterfall in Chino, there are about 20 stone monuments bearing poems by Matsuo Bashō, 小平雪人, and other well-known poets. The poems and monuments give the waterfall area a literary focus. The nearby path is currently closed due to a landslide; take this closure into account when planning a visit to the area.
At 長寿寒天館, visitors can learn about and taste natural 角寒天. The 角寒天 industry in Chino has a history of about 200 years. The activity thus combines a tasting with an insight into local industrial history. If you’d like to include both in your visit, check the latest operating details in advance.
永明寺山公園 in Chino has a roller slide about 70 meters long and a barbecue area. These are two specific leisure activities alongside the city’s cultural attractions. If you’d like to use the slide or barbecue area, confirm local conditions in advance.
