Discover Toba: Castle History, Parks and Marine Life
Accommodation in Toba
If you’re looking for a hotel in Toba, choosing a theme can make planning your trip easier: castle and city history, seasonal park highlights, or marine life and pearl cultivation. The sights vary in what they show and when a particular highlight can be enjoyed. Before booking, you can consider which experiences will matter most for your trip.
Toba Castle and Its Maritime History
Kuki Yoshitaka had Toba Castle built on a hill on the south bank of the mouth of the Myōkei River. According to tradition, it was completed in 1594. A sea castle, a rarity across Japan, it was surrounded by water, with its main gate facing the coast. The combination of its location, the water and the orientation of the gate makes clear what the term “sea castle” means. If you’re interested in Toba’s maritime history, the castle offers a tangible historical connection. A city description from 2022 locates surviving remains of the stone walls around the main enclosure and behind the city cultural center.
Parks with Different Highlights
Sadahama East Park provides access to the promenade “Kamome no Sanpomichi” (“Seagull Walk”). A dolphin statue stands in the central fountain basin; it was donated by Santa Barbara, Toba’s sister city. The fountain is lit at night; the lighting may change. Here, access to the named walking path meets an artwork connected to Santa Barbara.
A different, seasonal highlight awaits you at Shiroyama Park. In spring, it is a popular spot for viewing cherry blossoms; lanterns are lit at night, allowing visitors to enjoy the blossoms after dark. The lighting arrangements may change. Cherry blossoms are therefore a highlight expressly associated with spring, while the lanterns extend the viewing into the evening.
Sadahama West Park is home to the large pine tree Egonomatsu. It has long been regarded as a symbol of encounters. Unlike the seasonal blossom viewing, the focus here is on a traditional local meaning: the tree is associated with the idea of encounters.
Marine Life and Pearl History
Toba Aquarium displays 16 skeletal specimens representing 15 species, as well as eight taxidermy specimens representing eight species; most are marine mammals. The figures distinguish between specimens and species: the skeletal display has 16 specimens representing 15 species, while the taxidermy display has eight specimens representing eight species. Walruses also perform tricks for visitors. Animal appearances and programs may change. The aquarium thus offers different ways to experience marine life, through both specimens and performances.
In 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto became the first person in the world to cultivate pearls on Mikimoto Pearl Island. The island opened to visitors in 1951. The two dates mark different milestones: 1893 represents the historic achievement of pearl cultivation, while 1951 marks the beginning of the island’s history as a visitor attraction. If you’re interested in pearls, this timeline places the island both within the history of pearl cultivation and within the history of its visitor offerings.
