Hiratsuka brings together viewpoints, seasonal blossoms, a major festival, historic sites and local foods. When planning a hotel stay in Hiratsuka, it helps to start by considering when to visit and what activities you want to enjoy. The calendar is particularly useful: the blossoms on Shonan-daira are a spring highlight, while the Tanabata Festival takes place in early July.

Views between the plateau and the coast

Shonan-daira is a plateau about 180 meters high and a scenic viewpoint. From there, you can see the Shonan coast, the Tanzawa Mountains, Mount Fuji, and the mountains of Hakone and Izu. If scenic views are a priority when planning your trip, this spot offers a clear focus: the coast and several mountain ranges come together in one panorama.

Hiratsuka Sea Terrace is a park by the sea. From its observation deck and waterfront terrace, you can see Mount Fuji and look across Sagami Bay toward Enoshima and Izu. Compared with Shonan-daira’s elevated views of the mountains, the focus here is more on the bay and coast. Hiratsuka therefore offers two distinct landscapes to choose from.

Shonan-daira is a popular spot for viewing cherry blossoms and azaleas in spring, and it also serves as a green walking trail. This combines two seasonal interests at the viewpoint: spring blossoms and hiking. This seasonal timing distinguishes a spring visit from the Tanabata Festival in early July.

Tanabata Festival and its history

The Shonan Hiratsuka Tanabata Festival is held every year in early July and features elaborate Tanabata decorations and various events. The exact festival dates and program vary from year to year. If the festival is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates for the year you plan to visit.

Its history has two key milestones: in July 1950, the event began as a reconstruction festival to promote commerce. In July 1951, the first Tanabata Festival under its new name was held, modeled on Sendai’s Tanabata Festival. This distinguishes its commerce-focused origins from its later form as a Tanabata festival.

Shrine and pilgrimage route

Sakitori Shrine is an ancient shrine mentioned in the Engishiki register from the Heian period. Its grounds are home to large cherry and zelkova trees, as well as old cedars. The site combines its historical connection to the register with surroundings shaped by these different tree species.

The Shonan Hiratsuka Seven Gods Pilgrimage is a route about 10 kilometers long through Hiratsuka, taking approximately three hours to walk. The distance and estimated time make it easy to plan as an activity lasting several hours. Guided tours led by local volunteers are offered on the 7th of each month, except in July and August. Check the schedule in advance.

Seasonal foods and strawberries

Asatsuyu Hiroba offers fresh seasonal agricultural produce and local ingredients. Asatsuyu Kobo makes gelato using milk from Hiratsuka and seasonal local vegetables. The focus differs: Hiroba centers on produce and ingredients, while Kobo specializes in gelato made with these specific ingredients. Offerings and flavors may vary by season.

Shonan Strawberry Picking Center offers strawberry picking with 30 minutes of all-you-can-eat strawberries and free refills of condensed milk. As seasonal availability may vary, check current options before your visit. This is particularly helpful if you are planning your trip around this seasonal experience.

Green space at Shonan Kaigan Park

The large lawn at Shonan Kaigan Park is suitable for playing ball, running and walking with pets. The park offers specific ways to enjoy time on the grass and get some exercise outdoors, setting it apart from the city’s viewpoints and seasonal events.
