When planning your trip to Iwanai, you can choose from several areas of focus: 含翠園 is a historic garden, while 岩内岳 offers mountain scenery and alpine flowers in spring. The picture is rounded out by a shared taxi to several destinations and visitor information in the town. This lets you consider culture, nature, and practical orientation as different aspects of your trip.

Garden and Building at 含翠園

含翠園 brings together a Japanese garden laid out between 1904 and around 1914, and a single-story building in the Shōin style, constructed around 1920. The garden and building represent different periods: the garden took shape over several years, and the building was added later. The site offers both a garden and an architectural point of interest for planning your visit. If you are especially interested in historic gardens, the garden itself is a specific point of interest; if you pay attention to architectural styles, you can also take note of the single-story building and its Shōin style. The site was renovated from 2019 to 2024 and reopened in April 2024. In July 2025, it was recognized as a “Northern Garden Heritage” site.

Mountain Scenery at 岩内岳

The 1,086-meter 岩内岳 (Iwanai-dake) is located in Nozuka, within the town of Iwanai, on the western side of the Niseko mountain range. It belongs to the Raiden volcanic group and is the mountain in the Niseko range closest to the Sea of Japan. Maruyama Kannon, the Iwanai Onsen hot spring area, and the ski resort lie at its northern foot. Sea winds give the summit an alpine atmosphere despite its elevation. Many alpine plants bloom there in spring. From the summit, you can take in the main peaks of the Niseko mountain range together. If you are planning a climb, check the weather and trail conditions in advance and choose your equipment to suit the planned hike.

Getting Around the Town

道の駅いわない offers travel recommendations and road information. It is also home to たら丸館, a local products information center. These services address different practical needs: travel recommendations help you choose destinations, while road information helps you plan your drive. たら丸館 complements the local offering as a local products information center. Check current operating details before your trip. This lets you consider on-site visitor information separately from the practical details of your route.

Shared Taxi to Various Destinations

A shared taxi runs from the stop in front of Iwanai Bus Terminal to いわない温泉, the ski resort, and the trailhead for 岩内岳. When planning your trip, both the departure point and your destination are important. For 岩内岳, the destination is the trailhead. The three destinations offer different options: 温泉, the ski resort, or the start of a climb. Timetables and service may change, so check the current timetable before setting out. This lets you plan around the destination that matters for your stay and check the appropriate connection.
