Kimitsu: Discover Steel History and Nature Spots
Accommodation in Kimitsu
Kimitsu appeals to travelers who want to plan their stay around specific experiences: at Nippon Steel East Japan Works Kimitsu District, the focus is on steel history and a plant tour; elsewhere in the municipality, you’ll find a waterfall, a historical learning trail, scenic viewpoints, and local tastings. These offerings differ considerably. The plant tour requires a reservation and takes place on a specific weekday, while the other destinations offer a variety of nature and cultural experiences. When looking for a hotel, you can consider whether you want the industrial visit to shape your stay or which other experiences interest you.
Steel History and Plant Tour
Nippon Steel East Japan Works Kimitsu District was established in 1965. In 1968, it began integrated iron and steel production with the commissioning of its first blast furnace. Its establishment and the start of production were therefore two distinct historical milestones. The history comes to life especially vividly on a plant tour: visitors travel by bus through the works and see some of the steel products and manufacturing processes. Guides explain steelmaking, and videos also provide an accessible introduction to the production process. The tour combines a bus ride with explanations, but offers a view of only some of the products and processes.
Advance reservations are required for plant tours. They take place on operating days on the mornings of the first and third Mondays of the month; weekends and public holidays are excluded. Reserve in advance and confirm booking procedures, tour details, and the schedule before your trip. The municipal loop bus runs from the north exit of Kimitsu Station to the Kimitsu Works stop at Nippon Steel East Japan Works Kimitsu District. Check local bus service details before you travel as well.
Nature and Trails Across the Municipality
Toyofusa Great Falls is about 20 meters wide and consists of two tiers, with drops of approximately 7.5 and 2.5 meters. At the gentler second tier, the slope and flow of water can be used as a natural waterslide. Many families visit the waterfall in summer; visitors jump from a slope into the pool, swim there with inflatable rings, or play at the second tier. Conditions at the waterfall may vary. Check them before your visit if you plan to take part in these activities.
The Yaehara Historical Learning Trail offers a different way to explore the municipality. It runs from Yaehara Community Center to KurumajizĹŤ in Mitsuna, passing 14 sites. The route is approximately four kilometers one way. You can plan it as a separate route choice: the focus is on the stops along the way, rather than on seasonal activities at the waterfall.
Scenic Views and Local Experiences
From Kanoyama Kujukudani Observatory Park, you can look out over the Kazusa Hills, which stretch across a series of ridges at varying elevations. In autumn, the foliage is on display; in winter, morning mist sometimes appears. Hitomi Shrine stands at the summit of Hitomiyama, and its view has been included among the “100 Best Scenic Viewpoints in Chiba.” The two places offer different highlights: one has views of the hills and their changing seasonal scenery, while the other offers a view that has received special recognition.
The municipality also offers options for visitors interested in culture or food. Kururi Sake Museum displays local sake from eight breweries in Kazusa and offers tastings. Honey and Mead Workshop combines shopping with free tours at set times. At the foot of Kururi Castle, Kimitsu Forest Experience Exchange Center offers visitors the chance to try on samurai armor on days when it is open. For the workshop tour, the set times are important; for trying on the armor, it’s the days of operation. Check the latest details before your visit so you can plan around these different conditions.
