Awa District: Trails, Views and Culture
Accommodation in Awa District
In Kyonan, you’ll find specific examples: trails with different walking times, viewpoints, parks and cultural activities. This makes it easy to plan your trip around your own interests without setting aside the same amount of time for every destination.
Trails and Views in Kyonan
The popular Egatsuki Daffodil Road is about three kilometers long; one way takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes. The “Minamoto Yoritomo Course” hiking route explores the Jōmon and Kamakura periods, combining exercise with historical themes. For shorter walks, there are also more compact options: it takes about ten minutes to walk up to the Daikoku Observation Tower, which stands on the summit of Mount Daikoku.
From there, you can see Katsuyama fishing port, the townscape and the Mineoka mountain range. On clear days, you can also see Mount Fuji and the Izu Islands. Long-distance visibility therefore depends on the weather. Another viewpoint in Sakuma Dam Park overlooks the dam and surrounding mountains; it is a two- to three-minute walk away.
Walking Trails and Parkland
Sakuma Dam Park has a walking trail about 2.4 kilometers long. Around 2,200 cherry trees line the trails, including Kawazu cherry trees, Somei Yoshino cherry trees and Yaezakura. These different varieties are part of the park’s described tree population; no specific flowering times are given.
The park also includes a monument plaza, a rock garden, a wading pool, a Yatsuhashi Bridge and a viewpoint. In addition to the walking trail, there are several named places to use for orientation. Michi-no-Eki Kyonan is located on Tokyo Bay, with a beach resort directly next to it. These are different points of interest to consider when planning: a longer park trail, individual park facilities and a beach resort right beside the roadside station.
Culture, History and Local Offerings
In Kyonan, you can try multicolor printing of ukiyo-e prints in workshops at the Hishikawa Moronobu Memorial Museum. Another historical theme awaits in Ryushima: the site is regarded as the place where Minamoto no Yoritomo landed, is designated a historic site by Chiba Prefecture, and bears a landing monument.
Michi-no-Eki Hota Elementary School also includes accommodation. If you are considering this option, check its current availability and booking conditions in advance. The facility’s direct sales outlet mainly offers agricultural products from the region; the selection may vary. The outlet is a place to buy local products, not an indication that dining is available.
Getting There and Practical Planning
Since May 2026, some “Axy” express bus services on the Kamogawa–Tokyo route have stopped at Michi-no-Eki Hota Elementary School. The journey from the underground B area of Tokyo Yaesu Bus Terminal via the Aqua-Line usually takes about 80 minutes. Timetables and fares may change; check them before you travel.
Electric-assist bicycles, or e-bikes, are available to rent in Kyonan for trips within the municipality. Rental details may change, so check them before making plans. For planning your time locally, the trails mentioned above are easy to distinguish: the park trail is about 2.4 kilometers long, the Egatsuki Daffodil Road takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes each way, and the walk up to Daikoku Observation Tower takes about ten minutes. Which option suits your stay depends on the places and themes you want to include.
