Hiranai: Camellias, Coastlines, and Hotels
Accommodation in Hiranai
If you have camellia blossoms, birdwatching, swimming, or winter sports in mind, you can match the following places and time periods to your travel plans.
Camellias, Coastlines, and Island Views
Tsubakiyama is covered with more than 10,000 wild camellias. From late April to late May, they bloom red on the hillsides; the area is also designated as the northern limit of the range of wild camellias. For visitors interested in plants and their distribution, the blossoms offer a chance to experience a distinctive natural feature. Tsubakiyama Coast is recognized as one of Japan’s 100 most beautiful beaches and is used for swimming in summer.
Oshima is accessible by bridge from the tip of Natsudomari Cape. A lighthouse at the tip of the island offers views across the entire Mutsu Bay. Fishing and golf are available around Oshima. This means the island combines coastal views with two other specific activities in the surrounding area.
The gently sloping Asashore Coast lies at the eastern foot of the Natsudomari Peninsula and is known as a resting place for swans. The birds arrive from Siberia around mid-October and can be observed until the end of March. Asashore and the surrounding Natsudomari Peninsula are designated as the Special Natural Monument “Kominato Swans and Their Resting Place.”
Asamushi-Natsudomari Prefectural Natural Park also offers a broader landscape to explore: it stretches across the Natsudomari Peninsula as well as Aomori and Hiranai. The park’s coastal and natural attractions include Tsubakiyama and Asashore, among others.
Seasonal Activities in Hiranai
Yogoshiyama Ski Area offers runs for everyone from beginners to advanced skiers. A lift reaches the 180-meter-high summit in about six minutes. In summer, a super slide and a roller-ski facility operate on the ski area’s slopes. The seasons differ considerably: camellias bloom from late April to late May, while swans can be observed from around mid-October to the end of March. In summer, swimming at Tsubakiyama Coast and recreational activities at Yogoshiyama are also available.
Guided Tours and Insights into the Region
The Swan Guide Team offers 30-, 20-, or 10-minute guided tours by reservation. Topics include Raiden Shrine, Matsushima, and swan ecology. Routes and durations may change depending on the weather. Reservations and possible weather-related adjustments are part of planning this tour.
Hotate Hiroba is a facility in Hiranai where visitors can sample and see Aomori scallops and learn more about them. This adds a culinary theme and information about shellfish to the destination’s coastal, nature, and recreational offerings.
