In Yahel, hiking and singletrack cycling are the main travel interests. The selection includes two circular trails about five kilometers long, a section of the Israel National Bike Trail, and a jeep trail in the surrounding area. If you’re looking for a hotel in Yahel, you can first decide whether your plans center on views and walking trails, cycling, or an off-road vehicle route.

Hiking: two circular trails with distinct character

A circular trail about five kilometers long begins at Nahal Yaelon. From there, it climbs steeply to a viewpoint overlooking the entire Yahel Kibbutz and the Arava. The route then passes through a dry streambed that ends near the southern part of the kibbutz, and returns to the kibbutz via the “סינגל יהל” (Yahel Singletrack). Most of the trail runs through shaded areas, so this circular route may also be suitable for early summer hikes. Heat and conditions can vary; check the current trail conditions and access before setting out.

A second circular trail is also about five kilometers long and partly follows the “סינגל יהל” (Yahel Singletrack). It runs through the southern date palm grove and open terrain to a hidden stream with boulbusim rock formations. Because the trail passes through the stream between the rocks, it is intended for experienced hikers. The two hikes therefore differ in their stated requirements: one includes a steep climb, while the rocky section in the streambed is the key consideration for the other.

Singletracks and a jeep trail

The Yahel–Neot Semadar section of the Israel National Bike Trail begins at Yahel Kibbutz and heads south from there along the “הבולבוסים” (HaBulbusim) singletrack. The Yahel–Ketura singletrack starts at the entrance to the kibbutz. This is separate from the nearby singletrack selection, which ranges from family-friendly routes to technically challenging trails for experienced riders. Some of the information therefore refers to a specific trail with a set starting point, while other details describe the range of trails in the surrounding area. Conditions and availability may change.

A marked jeep trail in the vicinity of Yahel runs for about 16 kilometers along Nahal Yaelon to Route 40 at the entrance to Neve Harif. It is accessible only to off-road vehicles and is rated moderate. This route is therefore quite different from the singletracks. Check current trail conditions and access before driving.

Nahal Yaelon: views and access

A hill a few meters north of Yahel offers views of the Arava and Nahal Yaelon. Nahal Yaelon itself runs through a military firing zone. Access must be arranged in advance; unaccompanied access without prior arrangements is possible on Fridays, Saturdays, and public holidays. As access information may change, check current conditions and any requirements for arranging access before your visit.

The Southern District as a wider travel region

The wider Southern District travel region also offers distinct nature and history experiences. Avdat National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site along the ancient Incense Route in the Negev Highlands. The Ein Gedi Nature Reserve, Israel’s largest oasis, features springs and waterfalls, ibex and hyraxes, as well as flowing streams. A hiking trail along the perennial Nahal Arugot leads to a hidden waterfall and pools in the upper reaches. Thus, the Southern District offers a range of options beyond the trails around Yahel, including cultural and historical landscapes and nature areas rich in water.
