Kfar Menahem’s founding on Hanukkah
Kfar Menahem has a clearly dated founding story. The kibbutz founding ceremony took place on December 6, 1939, the first evening of Hanukkah. It was held at a “Tower and Stockade” site established two years earlier by members of the Irgun Menahem workers’ moshav. This means the two events were two years apart: the establishment of the site and, two years later, the founding ceremony. The Hanukkah evening also gives the date a specific calendar context. For visitors interested in local history, this is a striking starting point; the surrounding area complements this early kibbutz history with traces of much older settlement.
Tel Tzafit: history across long periods
In the vicinity of Kfar Menahem, settlement at Tel Tzafit began in the Early Canaanite period (3000–1800 BCE), starting with a small settlement. With interruptions, settlement continued until the establishment of the state in 1948. These interruptions are part of the story; the long time span does not mean that settlement was continuous. The trail at Tel Tzafit is marked with twelve posts bearing verses from the Bible. The long settlement sequence and the verses along the trail highlight different aspects: the historical development on the one hand, and a specific cultural feature on the other. Tel Tzafit can thus be explored both through its history and through a distinctive detail of the trail.
Trails and nature at Warrior Park
Nearby, Warrior Park offers two trails with different layouts: the Gat Trail is 1.5 kilometers long and circular, while the Sela'im Trail is 1.4 kilometers long and linear. The difference is 100 meters; alongside distance, the choice also comes down to the route’s shape: a loop or a linear trail. In winter and spring, cyclamens and anemones adorn the trails. This brings a specific choice of route together with a seasonal natural feature.
Slopes can make getting around independently more difficult. At the same time, the park has a central vehicle route with slopes suitable for wheelchairs. Parking areas provide access to numerous picnic tables, and the play and fitness garden offers activities for people with disabilities. Check current trail and parking conditions before your visit.
Views and remembrance at the David Karon Viewpoint
The viewing terrace at the David Karon Viewpoint is located on the ruins of Khirbat Damdam. From there, visitors can see Kibbutz Kfar Menahem and the coastal plain from Ashkelon to Rishon LeZion. The viewpoint commemorates Lieutenant Colonel David Karon, a kibbutz member and founder of intelligence unit 10, and also serves as a memorial to the unit’s fallen members. Here, the landscape and remembrance come together in one place.
