Archaeology in the Wider Northern District Destination
In the wider Northern District destination, Tel Hazor and Tel Megiddo are key archaeological sites. Tel Hazor and Tel Megiddo are biblical tells with significant remains of cities associated with the Bible; Tel Megiddo is one of three tells closely connected with events in the Bible.
At Tel Hazor, the visit focuses on the Upper City. Tel Hazor includes Solomon’s Gate, a gate with six chambers and two towers dating to the 10th century BCE. The Canaanite palace was used by the kings of Hazor in the 14th and 13th centuries BCE. The Late Bronze Age palace is considered the most elaborate in Israel and one of the most significant in the Levant.
The water system at Tel Hazor also illustrates the site’s engineering scale. The excavated shaft is 45 meters deep, with steps three meters wide carved into its vertical walls. Tel Hazor also preserves significant remains of an underground water-collection system, an advanced engineering achievement adapted to the geographical conditions for storing water. The fortifications at Tel Hazor are considered the finest example of their kind in the area from southern Turkey to the northern Negev.
Tel Hazor National Park can be reached from the north and south via Route 90 toward Ayelet Hashahar. Check your navigation before setting off.
Tel Megiddo reveals other aspects of archaeology in the Northern District. Its Early Bronze Age temple complex is exceptional in terms of the number of temples, the continuity of cult activity, and the documented ritual practices. The orthogonal city plan dates to the Iron Age and has few parallels in the Levant. Thus, Tel Megiddo brings together two features from different periods: the Early Bronze Age temple complex and the Iron Age city plan.
