Isfahan Province brings together an impressive cityscape, historic sites and gardens. In the city of Isfahan, covered bridges, domes and striking minarets shape the skyline. Kashan, Neyasar and Chadegan offer additional destinations, each with its own highlights. The Zayandeh Rud also provides geographical context: it rises in Iran’s southwestern mountains and flows through Isfahan Province.

Squares and Mosques in Isfahan

The historic Naqsh-e Jahan Square, now called Meidan Emam, is in central Isfahan. As a public city square, it is one of the city’s key attractions. Its buildings include Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, Imam Mosque on the south side, Qeysarieh Gate and Ali Qapu Palace, one of the four main buildings on the square. A traditional bazaar is also part of the complex. On the north side, the Qeyssariyeh portico leads to the two-kilometre-long Esfahan Bazaar. The different names reflect the square, gate and market as defining features of the historic urban landscape.

Masjed-e Jāme’ is in the historic centre and is Iran’s oldest Friday mosque. Four iwans surround its courtyard, and it also has two domes. The mosque is still used for prayers. In the context of Iranian architecture, it illustrates twelve centuries of Islamic building and decorative styles, including those of the Abbasid, Buyid, Seljuk, Ilkhanid, Muzaffarid, Timurid and Safavid periods.

Chehel Sotoun Palace is another of the city’s attractions. It is next to Naqsh-e Jahan Square and in the vicinity of Chahar Bagh. Khaju Bridge and Vank Cathedral are also among Isfahan’s sights. Together with the domes and minarets, these places offer a sense of the variety of the city’s architecture.

Gardens, Paths and the Bazaar in Kashan

In Kashan, Fin Garden combines garden design with a distinctive water system. In 2011, it was inscribed by UNESCO as one of nine significant Persian gardens. Its present form is attributed to Shah Abbas the Great of the Safavid era. Water flows through channels and fountains using gravity alone, without an energy source.

The paths also make the layout of the grounds easy to understand: the main path runs from north to south, from the entrance pavilion through the kiosk to the end of the garden. Another path runs east to west and today connects the bathhouse with the Kashan Museum. Fin Garden has two bathhouses, including the Royal Bath. The smaller bathhouse was used by servants and ordinary people. The paths and bathhouses described here add the garden’s layout and history of use to the picture of the grounds.

Kashan offers other cultural points of interest: Agha Bozorg Mosque is one of the city’s sights. The traditional bazaar sells souvenirs and handicrafts. Kashan is also known for rose gardens filled with fragrant red roses. This places a visit to the garden alongside the city’s architecture, market and rose gardens.

Nature and Seasonal Traditions

Niasar Waterfall is a natural attraction in Neyasar, a city in Isfahan Province. Neyasar is also known for producing rosewater: it has numerous workshops that make it, as well as other herbal distillates. A rosewater festival takes place every year from mid-Ordibehesht to mid-Khordad. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific dates for the year in question.

Numerous springs and rivers shape the landscape in Chadegan, and the climate is considered pleasant in summer. Zayandeh Rud Recreation Village is described as a tourist centre in Chadegan. The destinations therefore have distinctly different themes: Isfahan is known for urban architecture, Kashan for its garden and bazaar, Neyasar for its waterfall and rosewater tradition, and Chadegan for its springs and rivers.
