Erbil’s Citadel and Historic Urban Fabric

Erbil Citadel is a fortified settlement on a distinctive, oval-shaped settlement mound in the Erbil Governorate of the Kurdistan Region. Its fan-shaped pattern dates from Erbil’s late Ottoman period. A continuous row of tall 19th-century facades creates the impression of an impregnable fortress and defines Erbil’s skyline. The mound’s shape, urban pattern, and facades give the citadel a distinctly individual character in the city’s cultural landscape.

The archaeological mound’s artificial topography shaped the settlement pattern. The Ottoman urban fabric reveals a labyrinth of alleys and cul-de-sacs radiating from the main gate, the Grand Gate. Archaeological finds and research suggest that the mound contains layers and remains of earlier settlements. In the broader historical context of Iraq, Erbil is associated with Arbela, an important Assyrian political and religious center. The name Arbela has been attested in written sources since pre-Sumerian times.

Shaqlawa: Valley, Gardens, and Seasons

Shaqlawa lies on the slope of Sefin Mountain, in a large valley with dense forests and gardens. The city is considered a major tourist destination in Iraqi Kurdistan and attracts visitors from Iraq and the region, as well as some from the Gulf states. Shaqlawa is 50 km from the city of Erbil. The citadel and historic urban fabric of Erbil thus offer a contrast to Shaqlawa’s landscape-focused appeal.

Temperatures in Shaqlawa are considered moderate; winters are very cold and bring heavy rain and snow. If you plan to make the landscape a central part of your trip, this marked winter contrast is a practical consideration when choosing when to travel.

Parks, Library, and Historic Sites

In central Erbil, Shanidar Park is on Halabja Street, opposite Minara Park and near the region’s central bank. These landmarks provide clear orientation. The park has numerous waterfalls and streams, and its architecture is considered remarkable. The Shanidar Gallery, with a permanent decorative arts exhibition, is also located there. A cable car is another park feature. If you plan to visit the gallery or use the cable car, check what is currently available in advance.

Zaitun Library is located in Sami Abdul Rahman Park in Erbil. When it reopened in November 2025, its collection comprised more than 300,000 books in Kurdish and other languages, as well as newspapers and magazines. Another historic local landmark is Mam Khalil Teahouse in Erbil’s Qaysari Bazaar. The library, gallery, and teahouse complement the citadel with different cultural themes.

What to Consider When Choosing a Hotel

When choosing a hotel in the governorate, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay. If the citadel, Qaysari Bazaar, and parks are your priorities, focus your search on Erbil. If you want to prioritize Shaqlawa’s hillside setting, forests, and gardens, Shaqlawa is the right place to search. The 50 km distance between Shaqlawa and the city of Erbil gives this comparison a concrete sense of scale. First decide which place your trip will focus on, then search for a hotel that suits your plans.
