Erbil offers a range of points of interest: the Citadel and its settlement history, museums, Qaysari Bazaar, and parks. If you’re looking for a hotel in Erbil, the main focus of your stay can help guide your choice: are you most interested in history and exhibitions, markets and goods, or parks? The following places differ in their themes and the types of experiences they offer.

Citadel and Museums

The Citadel of Erbil is a fortified settlement on an impressive, egg-shaped tell. A tell is a hill formed by repeated settlement: generations live in one place and repeatedly build anew there. The Citadel therefore represents a settlement history that can be read in the shape of the hill. A later historical period also shaped its architecture: it features a fan-shaped pattern from Erbil’s later Ottoman period.

The Citadel has reopened to the public. Since this reopening is reported as a historical event, check current access before your visit. The Kurdish Textile Museum is located within the Citadel. It displays carpets, kilims, and nomadic tents from various parts of Kurdistan. The textile and tent exhibition thus complements the story of settlement and architecture with a different kind of museum content.

The Syriac Heritage Museum in Erbil offers another museum perspective. A historical mural traces a sequence from the Akkadian and Babylonian periods through the Assyrian period to the Chaldean period. This sequence gives the mural a historical focus. The museum also offers a virtual tour of departments covering agriculture, household life, culture, music, history, and traditional costumes. Alongside the presentation of historical periods, the museum therefore also explores different aspects of everyday and cultural life.

Markets and Parks

Qaysari Bazaar is a covered market founded in the early 13th century. Its covered lanes are home to gold and jewelry dealers, fabric and clothing shops, spice stalls, and household goods. The bazaar also has teahouses, where traditional Kurdish sweets are among the items on offer. A visit to the market therefore differs in focus from the museum exhibitions: here, the lanes, goods, and teahouses take center stage. Individual vendors may change.

Shanidar Park is in central Erbil. Its facilities include Shanidar Gallery, with a permanent exhibition of decorations, and a cable car; the park also has waterfalls and waterways. Before visiting, check whether the gallery is accessible and the cable car is operating. Shanidar Park 2 is next to Shanidar Park. The information about the cable car, waterfalls, and waterways refers to Shanidar Park; the two park names therefore refer to neighboring but separate locations.

Sami Abdul Rahman Park has a different focus. It was developed in two phases across an area of 800 acres and is one of the largest parks in Erbil. Its facilities include restaurants, kiosks, stadiums, roads, radio channels, and large cinema screens. Its amenities range from food and retail to sports and media. Since park facilities may change, it is advisable to check your specific expectations before visiting.
