Najaf: Hotels and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Najaf
Najaf offers several distinct themes for a culture-focused trip: Wadi Al-Salam represents a tradition of religious visits, Khan al-Sheilan is known for its historic architecture and museum collections, and the Hannana Mosque for its religious heritage. The Najaf Museum in the Cultural Palace is another attraction; its wax figures focus on people who shaped the city’s intellectual and cultural life.
Religious sites in Najaf
UNESCO’s Tentative List describes the Wadi Al-Salam cemetery as a place visited by millions of Muslims from different parts of the world. The visitors’ origins distinguish this religious site beyond Najaf and set it apart thematically from the city’s historic buildings and museums.
The Hannana Mosque is a historic mosque in Najaf. In the 1990s, an outer wall was built around it, enclosing a nearby well. It is called the Well of the Commander of the Faithful. This connects the mosque’s historical context with a specific architectural detail and the period in which it was built.
An edition of a pilgrimage guide announced on 22 July 2026 includes a map dedicated to the city of Najaf. It lists the Hannana Mosque as one of the important religious sites of Najaf and Kufa. The map thus places the mosque within a religious perspective encompassing both city names.
Khan al-Sheilan: architecture and museum
Khan al-Sheilan is an important archaeological and cultural monument in the centre of Najaf’s old town and is more than 200 years old. It was built on a 1,500-square-metre plot. Its location in the heart of the old town, its age and the size of the plot convey different aspects: the urban context, its historical setting and the monument’s scale.
The building consists of a basement and two upper floors with numerous interconnected rooms. Vaulted iwans line the rooms. Islamic inscriptions and ornaments adorn the walls, while the ceilings are made of brick vaults. This allows visitors to appreciate both the layout and the decorative design of the building: the connected rooms and iwans shape the interior arrangement, while the inscriptions, ornaments and vaults define its architectural details.
Khan al-Sheilan houses a museum with collections related to the cultural heritage and history of Iraq and the city of Najaf. The same building thus brings together the architectural history of the khan and a collection-based perspective on Iraqi and local heritage.
Notable figures and the city’s history
The Najaf Museum in the Cultural Palace opened in November 2025 and features 55 wax figures of religious, cultural and political figures. The people depicted lived in Najaf and shaped the city’s intellectual and cultural history. While Khan al-Sheilan looks at cultural heritage through its architecture and collection, the museum in the Cultural Palace focuses on individuals and their influence on the city’s history. These distinct focuses provide a factual basis for exploring Najaf’s cultural themes according to your interests.
