Darjeeling combines green hills with a variety of attractions: viewpoints, historic buildings, monasteries and local cuisine each give your stay a distinct focus. When planning, it is worth considering both places in town and some nearby destinations. This lets you choose your hotel location based on the visits that matter most to you.

Himalayan Views and Green Landscapes

Darjeeling’s landscape is defined by gently rolling hills covered with emerald-green tea bushes. Silver fir forests are also part of the scenery. From Observatory Hill, you can see snow-capped peaks, including Kanchenjunga. The public Nightingale Park also offers views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks.

Tiger Hill is a special destination for sunrise: the peaks of Kanchenjunga are illuminated first, before the sun appears at lower elevations. Mount Everest, at 8,848 metres, is also just visible from Tiger Hill. Whether the peaks can be seen depends on the weather and atmospheric conditions.

Lloyd Botanical Garden was founded in 1878. Forty acres of land were acquired for it as a remote outpost of Calcutta Botanical Garden. Old Cemetery offers a different view of the surroundings: from there, you can see the green tea plantations below and, from the upper section, parts of the city. The Kolkata Chapter of the Archaeological Survey of India classified it as a site of national importance; views and vegetation may change.

Nearby Destinations and Nature

North of Darjeeling lies Happy Valley Tea Estate: founded in 1854, it covers 177 hectares and sits at an altitude of 2,100 metres, three kilometres north of the city. From Batasia Loop, five kilometres from Darjeeling, you can see Kanchenjunga and other snow-capped Himalayan peaks. The Gorkha War Memorial there commemorates Gorkha soldiers who gave their lives since independence to protect national sovereignty.

Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary covers 38.6 square kilometres and lies at an altitude of between 1,500 and 2,600 metres. It is in the vicinity of Darjeeling and close to Tiger Hill. Animals found there include muntjacs, wild boars, Himalayan black bears, Indian leopards, jungle cats, rhesus macaques, Assamese macaques and Himalayan flying squirrels. Wildlife may change.

History, Architecture and Art

Along Mall Road, St. Andrew’s Church is one of the main attractions. Its history can be told through two dates: the foundation stone was laid in November 1843; after being badly damaged by a lightning strike in 1867, the church was extensively rebuilt in 1873. Bhutia Busty Monastery was moved to Darjeeling in 1879. Originally, it was a branch of Phodang Monastery, which belongs to the Nyingma school in Sikkim. Its collection of ancient Buddhist scriptures includes an original section of the “Book of Dead”.

The library at Dali Monastery contains books on Buddhism and philosophy. Its most popular feature is considered to be the hall with large, cylindrical, golden Tibetan prayer wheels, 1.8 metres high, which attracts large crowds. The Japanese Temple, also called Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Temple, features classic Japanese architecture. It is on Jalapahar Hill, about ten minutes from the city centre; travel time may vary depending on conditions. The temple offers a quiet, secluded place for meditation and reflection, although access may change. The Peace Pagoda was conceived as a place intended to bring people of all races and faiths together in their search for world peace.

Ava Art Gallery’s permanent collection comprises 60 works by Ava Devi, including watercolour, oil and thread paintings. The gallery is the only art gallery of its kind in Darjeeling. The specific display may change. Those interested in local crafts will find a variety of forms, including wood and bamboo work, metal artefacts, jewellery, paintings, carpets and woollen clothing.

Walks, Activities and Flavours

Tenzing Norgay Road begins at Chowrasta and passes through the villages of Toong-Soong and Aloo-Bari. It is almost flat and closed to vehicle traffic. Another distinctive route is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway: its 88.48 kilometres of track have a gauge of two feet (0.610 metres). The line connects New Jalpaiguri with Darjeeling and passes through Ghoom at an altitude of 2,258 metres.

Tenzing Rock and Gombu Rock face each other on Lebong Cart Road. Tenzing Rock is named after Tenzing Norgay, who climbed Mount Everest with Edmund Hillary in 1953. Pony rides are offered around Chowrasta, especially for children; local offerings may change. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute offers intensive mountaineering and adventure courses where participants can develop their mountaineering skills. The Tree Top Theme Park on the grounds has eleven obstacles, including a zipline. Tourists, including children aged seven and over, can use it without booking in advance or with a prior reservation. As admission arrangements may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

Rock Garden is laid out in tiers around a natural waterfall as a multi-level picnic spot. For a culinary break, thukpa—a Darjeeling dish with roots in Tibetan cuisine—offers another facet of the place.

Getting There and Choosing a Location

Buses run from Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand in Siliguri; you should also check that these services are up to date when planning your trip.
