Uttarkashi: Pilgrimage Sites, High Mountains and Traditions
Accommodation in Uttarkashi
Shiva is worshipped throughout the day at the Vishwanath Temple. The old, sacred shrine and the Shakti Temple in its courtyard form a special religious site: a massive brass trident rises from the Shakti Temple. Gangotri also combines a specific temple location with a pilgrimage tradition. The Gangotri Temple stands on the right bank of the Bhagirathi in the village of Gangotri, at an altitude of 3,140 metres. Gangotri is one of the four destinations on the Char Dham pilgrimage in Uttarakhand.
Temples, Festivals and History
Every year in January, the Magh Mela is held in Uttarkashi on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Another recurring festival is Anduri Utsav, also called the Butter Festival. It is celebrated annually in Raithal in Uttarkashi district. In the wider destination of Uttarakhand, locals thank Lord Krishna at this festival for protecting their livestock from harmful forces. The two events are associated with different places and occasions: the Magh Mela is linked to Makar Sankranti, while Anduri Utsav is associated with Raithal.
Another aspect of the region’s history is reflected in Gartang Gali: the wooden bridge was on a trade route between India and Tibet. The bridge’s historical significance can thus be distinguished from today’s temple and festival traditions.
High Mountains, Rivers and Seasons
Yamunotri lies in Uttarkashi district in the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,293 metres. Harsil Valley lies at 2,660 metres. In winter, the streams there freeze and a thick blanket of snow conceals the road. These seasonal conditions shape the landscape in a different way from the elevations of the pilgrimage sites.
Gomukh is the source of the Bhagirathi at the Gangotri Glacier and lies in Uttarkashi district at an altitude of 4,023 metres. Dodital is a freshwater lake in the same district. Nelong Valley is an Inner Line area on the India–China border and is open to tourists only during the day. If you are planning a visit, check this daytime restriction again before your trip.
Trekking: Two Different Distance Descriptions
The trekking route to Gomukh covers a distance of 19 kilometres from Gangotri. For Dodital, the trekking route begins after a 19-kilometre jeep ride from Uttarkashi to Sangamchatti; it then continues for another 24 kilometres. The figures therefore describe different sections: for Gomukh, the trekking distance from Gangotri is given; for Dodital, there is first a jeep ride followed by the rest of the route. For your planning, it is helpful to consider these stages separately rather than treating the kilometre figures as equivalent distance descriptions.
At Dodital, you can book an overnight stay at a forest rest house with permission from the Forest Department in Uttarkashi. Alternatively, visitors can camp in tents. The route therefore combines a specified trekking distance with two different overnight options, each subject to the stated conditions.
Courses and Activities at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering
The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi offers various courses. The Basic Mountaineering Course introduces women and men to mountaineering. The Adventure Course is intended for school students and adults. The programme includes trekking, rock climbing, camping, cooking and navigation, as well as learning about flora and fauna and their conservation. Check course availability before booking.
The institute’s Mountain-Terrain-Biking course also takes place on Uttarkashi’s challenging trails. NIM also holds a skiing course every year in January and February, depending on snow conditions. The courses therefore differ both in activity and season; for the skiing course, snow conditions are explicitly a factor.
