The village of Deogarh lies in Lalitpur district in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Its Dashavatara Temple is considered the earliest known Panchayatana temple in northern India and the first North Indian temple with a tower, or shikhara. These two architectural classifications give the structure a special place among the area’s temple sites. A later group of 31 Jain temples adds to Deogarh’s cultural landscape. Sculpture and painting are also represented: the Jain Museum displays sandstone sculptures from the Jain tradition and paintings related to Jainism; the Deogarh Archaeological Museum has a significant collection of sculptures.

Temples, sculptures and historic sites

Other religious and historical points of interest can be found at several named locations. In Pali, the Neelkantheshwar Temple has a unique three-headed statue of Shiva. A very large festival is held there every year during Maha Shivaratri. If you would like to attend, check the dates before your trip. In Dudhai, a 56-foot-high sculpture of the Narasimha avatar has been carved from the rock.

Talbehat Fort houses three temples dedicated to Angad, Hanumanji and Narsingh Bhagwan. Raja Mardan Singh ruled from this fort and fought alongside Rani Laxmi Bai against the British in 1957. Siron Khurd is known for its Jain temples and Gupta-period architecture. The village of Madanpur has Jain shrines from the medieval Chandel period, while Andela is home to Vishnu statues with a chakra. Together, these places showcase different forms of religious architecture and sculptural art.

The Betwa, forests and wildlife

The landscape and waterways also offer a range of travel experiences. From Deogarh Fort, three ghats—Nahar Ghat, Rajghat and the ghat at Siddh ki Ghufa—provide access to the banks of the Betwa River. Rajghat Dam is a large reservoir on the Betwa. Mansarovar Lake beside Talbehat Fort is suitable for a range of water sports, offering a different experience from the temples and museums.

The Mahaveer Swami Wildlife Sanctuary contains a group of 41 Jain temples spread over an area of approximately 8 acres. The Devgarh area of the sanctuary consists mainly of teak trees and is described as the “last teak forest” in southwestern Uttar Pradesh. Wolves, jungle cats, hyenas, wild dogs, mongooses, various deer, hares and nilgai are found in the surrounding areas. Large numbers of vulture and barn owl nests can be seen from elevated vantage points in the sanctuary. In the Betwa River area near the sanctuary, crocodiles, gharials, turtles, pythons and a wide variety of fish can also be found.

When planning your trip, you can choose between different areas of interest: temple architecture, Jain collections, sculptures and forts make up the cultural side, while the sanctuary, the Betwa and water sports offer other experiences.
