Khammam combines a distinctive fort history with archaeological traces and varied waterscapes. The city’s fort stands on a hill; Nelakondapalli draws attention to excavated building foundations, while Palair, Lakaram and Wyra each have their own connections to lakes and leisure. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the destinations by your interests and considering where to base yourself accordingly.

Fort and History in Khammam

Khammam Fort stands on a hill in the heart of Khammam city. The Kakatiyas built it in 950 AD; it was taken over by the Qutub Shahi rulers in 1512. These two dates give the fort a clearly defined historical chronology. The origin of the name Khammam also points to local tradition: it is said to derive from the Narasimhadri temple, built on a hill in the city. The fort and the temple’s history thus offer two distinct historical points of interest in the city.

Archaeological Traces in Nelakondapalli

Nelakondapalli brings another layer of history into focus. The historic site is enclosed by an earthen fortification wall covering almost 100 acres. Excavations uncovered the foundations of brick-built viharas, as well as wells, cisterns and a Mahastupa. The early historical finds from Nelakondapalli date from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. Together, the wall, water structures and religious architecture present a varied picture of the archaeological site.

The Sri Bhaktha Ramadasu Smaraka Mandiram is also located in Nelakondapalli Mandal. It is associated with the birthplace of Sri Kancherla Gopanna, also known as Sri Bhakta Ramdas. This association adds a distinct memorial site to the archaeological themes.

Their main attractions differ: Palair is associated with water sports and other leisure facilities, Lakaram with boating, and Wyra with its reputation for fishing.

Water and Wildlife at Puligundala Project

Puligundala Project is located in the Kanakagiri Reserve Forest Block of the Tallada Range in the Sathupally Division of Khammam district. Its water surface covers about 40 acres. The area is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including migratory birds. For travellers interested in nature, both the size of the water surface and the diversity of wildlife and plant life are highlights.
