Discover Hyderabad: Culture, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Hyderabad
Hyderabad can be explored through different themes: historic buildings, museums, green spaces and activities on the water. When looking for a hotel in Hyderabad, it helps to first consider which of these themes you want your stay to focus on. The places below show the many ways the city’s cultural history, collections and leisure activities are represented. The sights that matter to you can be a useful starting point for planning.
Reading the city’s history through its buildings
Construction of Chowmahalla Palace began in 1750 under Nizam Salabhat Jung and was completed between 1857 and 1869. Charminar was built in 1591 by Sultan Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah, and its minarets are 48.7 metres high. Mecca Masjid lies immediately next to Charminar to the southwest. Birla Mandir offers a different architectural accent: the temple combines styles from Utkal (Oriya) and South India and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Sri Venkateswara. Together, these examples reflect Hyderabad’s varied historical and religious connections.
The Qutub Shahi Tombs focus on an entire dynasty: the complex comprises seven tombs of former kings of Golconda and is considered the burial place of the entire dynasty in one location. The tombs form a large group on a raised platform, surrounded by landscaped gardens known as Ibrahim Bagh. The complex is among Hyderabad’s oldest historical monuments. The Paigah Tombs offer a distinct perspective on architectural history. Located in the suburbs of Pisal Banda in Hyderabad, they are examples of Indo-Islamic architecture that combine features of the Asaf-Jahi and Rajputani styles. The Qutub Shahi Tombs thus tell the story of a ruling dynasty and its burial place, while the Paigah Tombs highlight the combination of architectural traditions.
Museums with different areas of focus
The Salarjung Museum stands out for the size and arrangement of its collections: it contains 43,000 art objects, as well as 50,000 books and manuscripts, and has 38 galleries across two floors. The Dr. Y.S.R. State Museum houses collections dating from the 2nd century BC to the 19th century, including Buddhist and Jain sculptures and an Egyptian mummy. The “Art through the Ages” gallery at the Centenary Heritage Museum features terracotta, stucco, metal and wood. The Khazana Building Museum displays authentic cannons from the Qutb Shahi period and inscriptions from local excavations.
Alongside science, the B.M. Birla Science Centre also focuses on art and archaeology. Its offerings include an interdisciplinary space museum developed in collaboration with ISRO. Those wishing to explore Hyderabad through exhibitions can choose from a range of perspectives: collections of artworks and manuscripts, sculptures and historical materials, as well as science and space.
Water, gardens and wildlife
Hussain Sagar Lake was created on a tributary of the Musi and connects Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Speedboat and motorboat rides are available on the lake. Check which rides and times are currently available before making plans. Lumbini Park is an urban recreational area in Hyderabad, accessible via Necklace Road. From there, visitors can take a boat ride to see the monolithic Buddha statue up close.
NTR Gardens covers 55 acres and is home to a memorial to N. T. Rama Rao. A monorail offers a fun ride through the park. Visitors will find a different focus at Nehru Zoological Park, which is home to more than 1,500 species of birds, animals and reptiles. The park includes a dinosaur park, a nocturnal zoo, a natural history museum, a miniature train, several parks, animal rides and a lion safari. The range of attractions spans rides and park grounds, as well as wildlife and natural history.
Golconda Fort also combines architectural remains with a distinctive acoustic effect. The fort is in the western part of Hyderabad; its inner fortress contains the ruins of palaces and mosques, as well as a pavilion on a hill. A clap near the domed entrance can be heard at the pavilion on the hill, almost a kilometre away. When planning, you can decide whether you are more interested in historic buildings, museum collections, wildlife or activities on the water. Hyderabad is well connected to other parts of India by an extensive rail and road network.
