The Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary showcase two different sides of nature in the Tiruppur destination. The Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary covers 84,149 hectares and extends across the Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts; 387 square kilometres of it are in Tiruppur district. While the first sanctuary encompasses a vast landscape, the focus at Nanjarayan is on a lake and its birdlife. This distinction helps put the region’s nature experiences and destinations into perspective.

Sanctuary and Landscape

The part of the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary located in Tiruppur district includes grassy hills, waterfalls, river courses, teak forests, dams and reservoirs. This diversity makes the sanctuary a distinctive landscape feature of the region. Amaravathi Dam lies within the sanctuary in Tiruppur district.

A significant population of marsh crocodiles lives in the reservoir and catchment area of Amaravathi Dam. There is also a park at the dam. From there, visitors can enjoy views from steep steps across the plains to the north, as well as the Anaimalai Hills and the Palani Hills to the south. If you plan to visit the viewpoint, take the steps into account and, if needed, check current conditions locally.

Waterfalls and Rivers

The Panchalinga Waterfalls plunge from a height of five metres. The reservoir of Thirumoorthi Dam is also connected to the landscape through its origins: it was built across the Palar River, which rises on the northern slopes of the Anamalai Hills. The waterfall and reservoir thus offer different perspectives on Tiruppur’s waterscapes.

Wetland and Birdlife

Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary is in Tiruppur district and covers 125.865 hectares. The sanctuary’s lake is fed by the Nallar River. The area is an important breeding and feeding ground for resident and migratory birds. In contrast to the expansive landscape of the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, the focus here is on the lake and the birds’ habitats.

Temples and Religious Tradition

Arulmigu Avinashi Lingeswarar Temple is regarded as the first of the seven Thevara Stalams in the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu. At Kaithamalai near Uthukuli, devotees pull the temple chariot up the slopes. The two places represent different cultural connections: the regional significance of a temple and a religious practice on a hillside.
