Thoothukudi district combines a long, sweeping and scenic coastline with a historic tradition of pearl fishing. This gives you two themes to consider when choosing a destination: coastal nature and religious and architectural sites. The highlights below can help you plan your trip around your interests.

Coast, Wetlands and Nature

The Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve extends across Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram districts. Its landscapes include beaches, seaweed beds, small deltas, backwaters, creeks, mudflats, seagrass meadows, coral reefs, salt marshes and mangroves. The district’s natural appeal extends beyond the coast: wetlands, reefs and seagrass meadows are also part of its landscape.

The reserve is home to dugongs, whale sharks, sea turtles and dolphins, and has considerable ecotourism potential. Coral reefs and seagrass meadows add to its natural appeal. Thoothukudi district also includes the Teris and adjacent coral islands, as well as tall, densely grown Palmyrah groves. The coast, protected-area landscape, islands and Palmyrah stands give the nature theme several different dimensions.

Temples, Churches and Historic Sites

The Jain temple in Kazhugumalai contains depictions of Adinatha, Neminatha, Mahavira, Parvanatha and Bahubali. Vettuvan Kovil is also located in Kazhugumalai: a surviving monolithic Pandya temple, regarded as the only surviving monolithic Pandya temple. “Monolithic” describes a structure carved from a single stone and refers here to an architectural feature distinct from the figures in the Jain temple.

All nine Navathirupathi Vishnu temples are located in Thoothukudi district. The shrines are known for their stone depictions and temple architecture. The coastal temple of Thiruchendur is one of the six abodes of the god Muruga. In Manapad, the Holy Cross Church stands on a cliff and attracts thousands of pilgrims throughout the year. These religious sites bring together different faith traditions and architectural themes without reducing them to a single temple type.

Two construction dates also provide a sense of chronology: the Panimaya Matha Church in Thoothukudi was built by the Portuguese in 1711, while Kattabomman Memorial Fort was built in 1974. Along with the temples and churches, the fort offers another historical point of reference in the district. The two construction dates are 263 years apart.
