Temples and religious traditions

Mariamman Temple is in Vathalagundu on Pleespuram in Ward 15. Kaliamman Kovil is on Santhaipettai Street in Ward 10; Visalatchiamman Temple is on Agraharam Street in Ward 9. Combining the street name and ward can help you identify each temple when searching for it.

The Mariamman Kovil Festival is reported to last seven days in May, with 50,000 participants. The Kaliamman Temple festival is reported to last three days in October, with 30,000 participants. The details differ in both month and duration. If you plan your trip specifically around one of the festivals, check the dates in advance.

The Sringeri Shankara Math branch is near the Vinayakar Temple. The Vardhanthi celebration of His Holiness includes various Homas and Prasadam in the morning, followed by a procession with Vedic chants in the evening. Sri Shankara Jayanti is observed with a five-day Pooja and Vedaparayana. The events therefore differ in format: Vardhanthi includes morning and evening elements, while Sri Shankara Jayanti features the five-day Pooja with Vedaparayana.

Historical sites in the area

In Kunnuvarankottai, near Vattalagundu, a Dhyana Mandapa stands on the banks of the Vaigai. It is associated with Jagadguru Sri Sachchidanana Bharathi, the 25th head, who led Sringeri Sri Math for forty years. This person and his tenure give the Mandapa a specific historical connection. The ruins of the old Agrahara are also in Kunnuvaarankottai, near Vattalagundu. The two references differ in their focus: the Mandapa is chiefly associated with a particular Math figure, while the ruins are those of the old Agrahara. If you plan to visit these historical sites, check access to the Dhyana Mandapa and the ruins of the old Agrahara in advance so you can plan your visit accordingly.
