Nandanam: Sports History and the Chennai Book Fair

Nandanam is connected with the history of Y.M.C.A. College of Physical Education and with the Chennai Book Fair. This offers travelers different points of interest: physical education and public sports coaching on the one hand, and dated book fair editions on the other. The college’s history goes back to its founding in 1920; the facts about the fair refer to specific editions.

College History and Physical Education

Y.M.C.A. College of Physical Education was founded in 1920 by Harry Crowe Buck. Buck was a pioneer of physical education training in India. The founding year and founder provide a specific historical context for Nandanam’s connection with sport. The precise connection is physical education: its history leads to an educational institution, not merely a list of individual sports. If you also consider sport’s educational dimension when choosing a destination, the college’s founding history offers a distinct perspective alongside public coaching.

Public Sports Coaching

The college offers the public coaching in athletics, basketball, boxing, cricket, football, handball, hockey, volleyball, swimming, gymnastics, yoga and tennis. The selection ranges from team sports to swimming and forms of exercise such as gymnastics and yoga. Public coaching is described as a regular, year-round offering, including weekends and summer. If you would like to schedule a particular training session during your stay, confirm the current arrangements directly with the college. More than 2,500 children benefit from the program each year; the number of beneficiaries may change over time.

Chennai Book Fair: Specific Editions and Dates

The Chennai Book Fair also offers a cultural connection with Nandanam. More than one million books at over 900 stalls were announced for the 2025 edition. The 49th Chennai Book Fair took place from January 8 to 21, 2026, at the YMCA Grounds in Nandanam; the Indian Postal Department participated. Thus, an announced figure for 2025 and the specific, now-past dates and participation details for 2026 appear side by side. Each refers to its respective edition. If you are planning a trip for a book fair, check the dates of the edition relevant to your trip.

Putting Your Reason for Travel in Context

When looking for hotels in Nandanam, it helps to consider your reason for travel alongside the timing. The founding history provides a historical connection; arranging public coaching requires confirming the current arrangements. For a trip to the fair, however, the dates of the relevant edition matter: the January 2026 dates have passed. This can help you decide whether the history of physical education, a training opportunity or a book fair is the main reason for your stay.
