When looking for a hotel in East Sikkim, it helps to decide in advance what you want to focus on during your stay. Gangtok’s specific landmarks range from a cable car route and distinctive streets to monastery festivals; Rumtek and Tsomgo Lake are other destinations in the area around Gangtok. This lets you plan city activities, cultural events, and excursions as separate parts of your trip.

Getting to Gangtok and finding your way around

Pakyong Airport is the nearest airport to East District, about 32 kilometres from Gangtok. Taxis and buses are available from there to Gangtok. Gangtok can also be reached by taxi from Bagdogra and from the New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri railway stations. Buses operated by Sikkim Nationalised Transport run to Gangtok from the Siliguri bus station; the journey takes approximately five to six hours. Taxis can be booked at airports and railway stations or through tour operators. Check current connections, timetables, and road conditions before travelling.

The bi-cable Zig-back cable car runs for one kilometre from Deorali to the Tashiling Secretariat. In clear weather, it offers views of the Khangchendzonga mountain range, Gangtok, and the valley below. White Hall is within Gangtok’s city limits, on The Ridge, a promenade about one kilometre long at the city’s highest point. MG Marg is Gangtok’s main street: vehicle traffic is not allowed there, and shops line both sides. The cable car route and the length of The Ridge are each around one kilometre, but describe different routes and places in the city.

Monasteries and festival dates

Enchey Monastery can be reached by road from Chand Mari and from the Ridge side, or by a footpath from JLN Marg near Chandmari. Check the routes locally before your visit. The monastery’s Detor Cham is a colourful Cham dance festival. It takes place on the 18th and 19th days of the twelfth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar; the Gregorian calendar date varies from year to year. Be sure to confirm the specific date for your trip.

The Gangtok Flower Festival begins in March with an orchid show that includes competitions in various categories. Held annually in December, the Gangtok Food and Culture Festival showcases Sikkim’s multicultural cuisine as well as traditional music and dance performances. Check the current dates and programme before travelling, especially if you plan your trip around a festival.

Excursions around Gangtok

Rumtek is about 23 kilometres from Gangtok. The monastery is the seat of His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa of the Kargyu school of Buddhism and the largest monastery in Sikkim. Its Tibetan architecture is almost a replica of the original monastery in Tsurpu, Tibet; it also houses rare Buddhist religious artefacts. Rumtek offers opportunities for local sightseeing, monastery tours, white-water rafting, and trekking. This means the monastery and religious art on the one hand, and other activities on the other, are distinct aspects of the destination. Confirm availability locally.

Tsomgo Lake is about 38 kilometres from Gangtok and is considered sacred by the people of Sikkim. Pilgrims seek blessings there and pay homage to the revered spirits. Visitors can hike along scenic trails on the lakeshore and ride ponies around the lake; the availability of these activities may vary by season. Unlike Rumtek, this destination combines religious significance with activities along the lakeshore. Rumtek is closer to Gangtok, while Tsomgo Lake is a more distant excursion option.
