Sanderao lies at the foot of Hekji Hill in the Nimbeshwar Mahadev Hills. Its townscape is shaped by religious sites and historical associations. For orientation, it is helpful to distinguish between the town centre and the surrounding area: Shri Sanderao Tirth is in the town centre, next to the Rawla, the palace of the local royal family. The Nimbo Ka Nath Temple, dedicated to Shiva, is in the surrounding area on the road between Falna and Sanderao. You can therefore consider these two temple sites separately when planning your trip.

Images and Temple Architecture

Specific details about images and architecture are part of the town’s religious character. A shrine in the village of Sanderao houses a white, 75 cm-high image of Sri Shanthinath Bhagwan in the lotus position. Three sides of the image of Sri Shantinath Bhagwan are framed by carved archways. Its colour, dimensions and posture describe the image, while the archways provide a precise architectural detail. Along with the names, visitors interested in religious architecture will find specific design features here.

Historical Associations and the Religious Calendar

One account traces the religious history back to 1092: according to the account, the Sanderao assembly arranged for an image to be installed by Jinchandra in a temple of the Sanderak Gachchha. A tradition concerns the image of Sri Shanthinath Bhagwan that serves today as the principal object of worship. It is said to have been brought here from elsewhere and consecrated during renovation work in the 16th century of the Vikram Era; it bears no inscription. These accounts offer different historical perspectives: one gives a specific year for an installation, while the other describes the origins of today’s principal object of worship in terms of an era.

The annual calendar also offers a clear point of reference: a Dhvaja ceremony is held every year on Vaishakh Sukla 6 at the Jain temple in Sanderao. Vaishakh Sukla 6 follows the traditional calendar. If you would like to include the date in your travel plans, check its corresponding date for the year in question against this calendar. The Jain temple is six feet below ground level. A Guru Mandir and a Manibhadra temple are located beside it. The annual date is a point of reference in time, while the temple’s position below ground level describes its physical structure.

Location and Orientation

Two reference points are useful for finding your way: Sanderao is on National Highway 14, and Falna railway station is another point of reference. The highway is a local reference point; the distance to the railway station, by contrast, describes how far away Falna is. If road or rail travel is important to your plans, you can consider these details separately. Along with the temple history and the location at the foot of Hekji Hill, these transport links provide practical guidance when considering Sanderao as a travel destination.
