Karauli is part of the tourist Braj circuit in Rajasthan. If you are looking for a hotel in Karauli, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: religious traditions, historic architecture or nature. Temples, festivals, forts and a sanctuary offer different themes to explore. The following information puts these points of interest into context and gives you a basis for planning visits and travel according to your interests.

Temples, Pilgrimage Routes and Fairs

Kaila Devi Temple is outside Karauli, about 25 kilometres from the city, on the banks of the Kalisal River in the Trikut Hills. Gufa Temple is considered the original temple of Kaila Devi. Devotees walk about eight to ten kilometres to reach it and receive darshan. This pilgrimage route should be distinguished from the distance between Kaila Devi Temple and the city; the figures refer to different places and different aspects of travel planning.

A two-week fair is held every year at Kaila Devi Temple and attracts millions of pilgrims. The dates vary from year to year, so if you are travelling specifically for the fair, check the dates for your travel year. In Karauli district, Shri Mahavir Ji Temple is dedicated to the Jain Tirthankaras. Its design and architecture are strongly influenced by Jain art. The Jain connection therefore offers a different religious perspective from the pilgrimage practice associated with Kaila Devi.

A famous kund is located in Gadhmora; an annual fair is held there during Sankranti. You should also check the dates before travelling for this event.

Buildings and History

City Palace was originally built by Arjun Pal in the 14th century. Outside Nadi Gate, on the route from the palace to the river, is Raja Gopal Singh’s Chattri, decorated with frescoes. The palace and the Chattri offer different historical points of reference: the palace has a specifically named original builder and construction date, while the Chattri is distinguished by its frescoes and location.

Timangarh Fort is about 1,000 years old and known for its unique architecture; it is a protected monument in Karauli district. Utgir was also built by the Lodha warriors on a triangular peak in the Aravallis. The forts add different historical and landscape perspectives to Karauli’s buildings.

Nature and Wildlife

Another focus is the National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary. It is home to crocodiles, turtles and 150 bird species. This brings wildlife into focus alongside religious and architectural themes. The species information describes which groups of animals are part of the sanctuary; it cannot predict individual sightings.

Planning Your Journey

Hindaun City and Gangapur City are among the nearest railway stations. Hindaun City connects Karauli to other parts of India via the Delhi–Kota main line. Check specific train schedules for your travel date. By road, Karauli is connected with large and small cities in Rajasthan as well as the rest of India. Once you know your starting point, you can check which rail or road connections are suitable for your journey.
