The walled city of Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II and laid out on a grid interpreted as being inspired by Vedic architecture. The historic city of Jaipur was deliberately built on a plain rather than in hilly terrain. Urban planning, buildings, temples and green spaces offer different perspectives on Jaipur.

Jantar Mantar: Monumental Astronomy

Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is regarded as the most significant and best-preserved group of monumental, fixed instruments built in India during the first half of the 18th century. Some instruments are the largest ever built in their respective categories. They were designed to observe astronomical positions with the naked eye. These superlatives refer to two measures: the significance and preservation of the group as a whole, and the size of individual instruments within their categories. The purpose of observation and the monumental dimensions are therefore both integral to the character of the observatory.

Temples and Architecture in Jaipur

Galtaji includes the Ramgopalji temple complex, also known locally as the Monkey Temple or Galwar Bagh. The small Surya Mandir, a temple dedicated to the Sun God, stands on a hill near Galtaji. This area thus features both a named temple complex with several local names and a separate temple situated on a hill.

The Albert Hall Museum was named after the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which also inspired its design. The Hawa Mahal combines Hindu Rajput and Islamic Mughal architectural styles. Thus, the Albert Hall Museum is notable for the story behind its design, while the Hawa Mahal is notable for its combination of architectural styles.

Green Spaces and City Views

Central Park is a large green space in the heart of Jaipur. Jawahar Circle has a different focus: it features a rose garden and several concentric jogging tracks. The musical fountain at Jawahar Circle features shows with more than 270 effect types and over 300 colored lights; the shows may vary. While Central Park is defined by its central location and large green space, Jawahar Circle brings together a garden, running tracks and a fountain.

Ishwar Lat is a 60-foot-high minaret offering views over the city. It adds a viewpoint to the ways of experiencing Jaipur, while the parks are described primarily in terms of their green spaces and varied design features.
