Hanumangarh can be understood through its history, religious sites and transport links. If you are looking for a hotel, choose Hanumangarh as your destination; the following points can help you weigh the historical and regional themes as you plan your trip.

Bhatner Fort and Hanumanjee Mandir

Bhatner Fort, also known as Hanumangarh Fort, stands in the centre of Hanumangarh on the banks of the Ghaggar. Its architecture is defined by tall gateways and large, rounded bastions. The fort was built about 1,700 years ago by Bhupat, son of Bhatti, the king of Jaisalmer. It is also mentioned in the Ain-e-Akbari. Inside the fort are temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman.

Another religious landmark in Hanumangarh is Hanumanjee Mandir. This small royal temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. A stone image of Lord Hanuman in traditional clothing stands in the shrine. The fort and temple thus offer different insights into the destination’s religious and historical character: the fort is notable both for its architectural features and its historical mention, while the image in the shrine is the focus at the mandir.

Other Religious Sites in Hanumangarh District

Hanumangarh District is also home to places with a variety of religious and architectural associations. The Sila Mata–Sila Peer Temple is revered by Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims. The Shri Gogaji Temple in Gogamedi combines Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. Near Gogamedi, the Dhuna Shri Gorakh Nathji Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the goddess Kali.

In Nohar, the Shri Kabootar Sahib Gurudwara commemorates Guru Gobind Singh’s historic visit in November 1706. At the Mata Bhadrakali Temple, an idol made entirely of red stone is a striking work of religious art. These places are part of the wider Hanumangarh destination and should not be confused with the sites in the city centre.

Kalibangan: Museum and Archaeological Finds

Kalibangan is located in Hanumangarh District. The Kalibangan Archaeological Museum was established in 1983 to preserve and display materials recovered during excavations from 1961 to 1969. Finds excavated there include seals, human skeletons, scripts, beads, coins, toys, terracotta objects and shells. Wells, baths, graves, a citadel area and streets laid out in a grid pattern were also uncovered.

The museum is on the south bank of the Ghaggar, about five kilometres from Pilibangan railway station. This distinguishes Kalibangan’s museum and excavation history from the attractions in Hanumangarh city centre. Badopal Lake, a freshwater lake in Pilibanga tehsil, is also in the district.
