Red sandstone, historic buildings and nature experiences offer different focal points for a trip to Dhaulpur. Dholpur City Palace, also known as Dholpur Palace, was once the royal family's residence and was built from red sandstone. Sandstone from Dholpur was also used in the construction of the Red Fort in Delhi. Shergarh Fort offers a different architectural perspective: its features include carved depictions, statues of Hindu deities and Jain motifs.

Buildings and Their History

The stepwell complex and the tower on Town Hall Road also tell of different phases of construction. The royal stepwell complex was built between 1873 and 1880 behind Nihaleshwar Temple. Construction of the 150-foot-high tower began in 1880 and was completed around 1910. Locally, the tower is known as Ghanta Ghar.

A cultural trip also offers a choice of religious sites with different associations. Chopra Shiv Temple is among Dholpur's oldest Shiva temples and was built in the 19th century. Sher Shikhar Gurudwara near Machkund in Dholpur was established after Guru Hargobind Sahib's visit. The religious themes therefore range from Shiva worship and the history of the gurudwara to the Hindu deities and Jain motifs at Shergarh Fort.

Another excursion takes you to Jhor, a village five kilometres from Dholpur. This is where Bagh-e-Nilofar is located, described as the oldest Mughal garden. Only a limited part of the original structure has survived. This is part of the site's character: the garden is associated with a long history, while only some of its original fabric remains.

Nature and Experiences Around Dhaulpur

Those who would rather focus on nature than architectural history will find other points of interest. Damoh is a waterfall in Sarmathura and is considered a major tourist attraction in the district. Ramsagar Sanctuary is home to rare fish, crocodiles and water snakes. A Chambal river safari near Dholpur offers the chance to see gharials, Ganges river dolphins and various bird species. The waterfall, sanctuary and river safari offer different nature experiences; wildlife sightings are possible, but not guaranteed.

Machkund in Dholpur also has a light and sound show featuring 3D projection mapping. If you would like to include it in your trip, check the show dates in advance. The show adds a different format to the historical and religious themes, while Damoh and Ramsagar Sanctuary bring the natural surroundings to the fore.

Plan Your Journey and Find a Hotel

It is worth checking the relevant schedules when planning your specific journey. Rail and bus services therefore offer a practical starting point for planning your trip, without assuming a particular travel time.

If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Dhaulpur, first decide what matters most to you: red sandstone architecture and historic buildings, religious sites, or nature and wildlife. Then factor rail or bus travel into your plans.
