Sri Muktsar Sahib: Memorial Sites and Maghi Mela
Accommodation in Sri Muktsar Sahib
On 29 December 1705, forty Sikhs fell in battle near Lake Khidrana, also known as Isharsar, while fighting a Mughal army pursuing Guru Gobind Singh’s forces. They are remembered as the Chali Mukte in Sikh history and in the daily Ardas prayer. The Battle of Khidrana, associated with Muktsar, was fought at the Khidrana water reservoir. The historic battlefield is marked by a sacred shrine and a water reservoir.
Memorial Sites by the Sarovar
An important landmark in Sri Muktsar Sahib is Sri Darbar Sahib, the city’s main shrine on the western bank of the Sarovar. The first Sikh families to settle there established the shrine around 1743. The site thus brings together religious practice and the history of settlement.
Other sites by the Sarovar also preserve the account of the battle. About 50 metres west of the Sarovar, Arigitha Sahib marks the place where Guru Gobind Singh had the martyrs’ bodies cremated. Another site is marked near the southeastern corner of the Sarovar: this is where the Mukte had taken up positions behind trees and shrubs arranged to resemble tents for camouflage. These spatial references help distinguish the various memorial sites.
Maghi Mela and Religious Practice
The Maghi Mela takes place every year in January, on the day after Lohri, and commemorates the courage of the 40 Muktas. The Maghi day in mid-January is also the date of the main annual celebration for Sri Darbar Sahib and other shrines in Sri Muktsar Sahib. Many devotees come for religious discourses and ritual bathing in the sacred Sarovar; pilgrims also bathe there during the Maghi Mela.
The festival calendar therefore provides a specific seasonal reference for travel planning. If you plan to visit for the Maghi Mela, check the date for the relevant year before booking your hotel stay. The recurring celebration and the historical commemoration are connected, but address different questions: the battle shapes the historical context, while the Mela reflects this connection in the religious calendar.
Shrines and Other Attractions
Places of interest in Sri Muktsar Sahib include Gurdwara Tuti Gandi Sahib, whose significance is connected with Sikh history. Gurdwara Taran Taran Sahib is also among the places of interest in the tourism context of the city and its surroundings, and offers insight into the Sikh tradition. Another historic gurdwara is Guptsar Sahib in the village of Chhatteana in Gidderbaha Tehsil, about 24 kilometres from Sri Muktsar Sahib.
Mukta Minar is one of the city’s main attractions; the complex includes an open-air theatre. Angooran Wali Maseet, an old mosque, is located near the railway station. Together, these sites offer a range of historical and cultural points of interest, so a visit need not be limited to shrines alone.
Sarai Naga is also part of the historical context of Muktsar district in Punjab: the village is the birthplace of Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji. It thus serves as a distinct point of interest in the district, while the battlefield and the shrines mentioned above form the focus of Sri Muktsar Sahib’s history.
Crafts and Getting There
Muktsari jutti is renowned worldwide. In the heart of the city, around a gurdwara, shops make and sell these handmade shoes. This glimpse of local craftsmanship adds another aspect of city life to visits to religious and historic sites.
Sri Muktsar Sahib lies on the Bathinda–Ferozpur railway line. The station is served by trains to and from major cities in the country, though services are infrequent. By road, the city is on the Moga–Ganga Nagar Road and is connected by an extensive road network to important places within and beyond Punjab. These include Jammu, Shimla, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Rajasthan, and Delhi. Private and state-run buses travel to various parts of the country; taxis and auto-rickshaws provide short trips within the city. When planning your journey, you can take into account train frequency, bus connections, and options for getting around the city over short distances.
