The stone walls of Gudahandi Cave bear prehistoric scripts, pictographic inscriptions and drawings. Together with temple ruins, festival traditions and waterfalls, they show how varied an exploration of Kalahandi can be. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether you want to focus mainly on archaeological sites and temples, cultural performances or nature experiences.

Archaeological Traces and Temples

Junagarh was the former capital of the erstwhile princely state of Kalahandi. The fortified site includes temples with Oriya inscriptions. At Belkhandi, at the confluence of the Tel and Uttei rivers—both tributaries of the Mahanadi—monument ruins dating from the 12th century are among the archaeological remains. Sculptures of the Sapta Matruka and Uma Maheswar can also be found there. The Belkhandi ruins are kept in a small museum next to the temple grounds.

The setting of the Asurgarh fort ruins is another striking detail: they lie between an oval pond covering almost 200 acres and the Sandul River. Karlapat is home to a temple dedicated to the goddess Manikeswari. On the banks of the Kali Ganga in Mohangiri stands a ruined Shiva temple, with epigraphic records on its walls and pillars. These different sites bring together religious traditions, inscriptions and archaeological traces, while each has its own distinctive character.

Festivals, Dance and Crafts

The Ghumura dance is one of Kalahandi’s festival traditions and is performed throughout the district for Nuakhai, Dushara and other festive occasions. Suanga is a folk theatre performed especially in the evenings in Junagarh, Jaipatna, Dharamgarh and Kesinga during Dushara, at weddings and birthdays, and at other festive times. A performance lasts six to eight hours—a duration that calls for a different kind of planning than a short programme item. Kalahandi’s woodcraft combines folk and classical forms, adding another form of cultural expression to its performance traditions.

Dokarichanchara is a picnic and excursion destination in Kokasara village, on the border between Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts. A nine-day festival is held every year at the old Ram temple there for Sri Ram Navami. The site thus combines a specific festival tradition with its role as an excursion destination; these are two different aspects you can take into account when planning your trip.

Waterfalls and Landscapes

The waterfalls differ in height: Dokaridhara plunges 200 feet, while Phurlijharan is a year-round waterfall about 30 feet high. Phurlijharan is also one of the main tourist attractions within the Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary. Another waterfall, Khandual, lies near Karlapat at the foot of a hill. The height figures offer a concrete comparison without implying that the waterfalls are alike.

The Ampani Hills offer panoramic views of nature. In the Haladigundi Valley, reflected sunlight makes the landscape appear yellow in the morning and evening. Axis deer, sambar deer and black panthers can be spotted at the Behera Reservoir in the Ampani area; sightings may vary by season. Nature lovers can therefore find different points of interest: scenic views, waterfalls and wildlife watching each offer a distinct reason to include these places in their travel plans.

Wildlife, Nature Trails and Getting Around

The Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary is home to leopards, elephants, sambar deer, nilgai, barking deer, musk deer and sloth bears. Rare bird species found there include the green avadavat, Malabar trogon and great eared nightjar. This diversity describes the sanctuary as a natural area; wildlife sightings at the Behera Reservoir may vary by season.

The Rabandhara ecotourism destination offers opportunities for short hikes and nature trails, as well as views of tropical deciduous forests. It is about 10 km from Bhawanipatna, the district headquarters of Kalahandi, and 4 km from Rabandhara Waterfall in Bhatangpadar. The nearest railway station for Dokarichanchara is Junagada. Check rail connections again before your trip.
