Khonoma: Nature, Culture and Angami History
Accommodation in Khonoma
Khonoma brings together themes of Angami history, conservation, landscape and agriculture. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these aspects separately: they describe different reasons to explore the village and offer different perspectives on the place.
Location and Landscape
Khonoma is considered one of the oldest Angami villages and is located 20 km west of Kohima. Its location and historical context answer different questions: the distance establishes where the village is, while its description highlights its Angami history. Views of rice fields and forested hills add a landscape perspective to this information. If you choose a destination based on specific themes, you can weigh Khonoma’s cultural and landscape aspects separately.
Conservation and Observation
The Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary protects the endangered Blyth’s Tragopan. This gives conservation in Khonoma a specific focus on an endangered bird species. In addition, a government report from 2021 described bird- and butterfly-watching as growing in importance. The two themes have different emphases: the Tragopan represents the specific protection of a species, while observation reflects a broader interest in birds and butterflies. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a comparison between a clearly defined conservation focus and two wildlife-watching activities.
The Morung Experience Centre
The Morung Experience Centre was inaugurated on 29 November 2025 as part of the Forest & Biodiversity Management in the Himalaya (Nagaland) Project. The project was funded by German development cooperation through KfW Development Bank. The centre was conceived as a place for biodiversity education, conservation learning and ecotourism, and is intended to introduce Khonoma’s cultural and natural heritage to visitors from Nagaland, India and abroad. Its planned goals include conveying cultural values and ecological significance, as well as contributing to environmental awareness, conservation, ecotourism and the preservation of traditional knowledge systems. The concept combines nature-related education with cultural interpretation: it focuses on biodiversity and conservation as well as cultural values and traditional knowledge. This distinguishes the Centre from the Sanctuary, whose stated purpose is to protect the endangered Tragopan. If you would like to include the Centre in your travel plans, check in advance what visiting options are available.
Rice Cultivation as Another Perspective
A NEPED report lists 24 rice varieties grown in Khonoma. This diversity of varieties adds an agricultural perspective to the views of the rice fields: the fields relate to the landscape, while the number of varieties relates to cultivation. For you, this is a different way to explore the place than through its sanctuary or cultural centre. If you are interested in agriculture, you can consider the rice varieties as a distinct topic alongside the natural and cultural aspects.
