At the center of Solapur stands the Siddheshwar Temple, surrounded by a large water tank that makes it seem like an island. Together, the temple and water shape the character of this distinctive religious site. Solapur’s festival calendar also gives the city its own rhythm: Siddheshwar’s wedding festival is celebrated for three days each year at Makar Sankranti—on Bhogi, Sankrant, and Kinkrant. During this festive period, Solapur also hosts the Gadda Jatra fair, which lasts fifteen days. If you want to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the specific dates in advance.

Temples and Festival Traditions

In Karmala, the Kamala-Bhavani Temple was built by Rao Raje Nimbalkar in 1727. The temple’s annual Yatra takes place from Kartik Purnima to Chaturthi. The named festival periods therefore differ: Siddheshwar’s wedding festival is associated with three days at Makar Sankranti, while the Yatra lasts from Kartik Purnima to Chaturthi. If you are interested in either of these dates, you can use the relevant festival calendar as the starting point for planning your trip.

Pandharpur is considered a sacred place of Shri Vitthal and Shri Rukmini and is known as the “Southern Kashi of India.” The old Shri Vitthal Temple was renovated in 1195 AD. The Chandrabhaga River, also called the Bhima, flows through Pandharpur. The festivals of Aashadhi Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi each attract around 800,000 to 1,000,000 people. The temple’s history, the river, and the festival dates offer different ways to explore the place; the visitor numbers also give an idea of the scale of both festivals.

Akkalkot is a sacred place of Shri Swami Samarth Maharaj. The present-day temple was built around a famous banyan tree. At the temple, the Annachhatra distributes free meals to devotees twice a day. In Barshi, Bhagwant Mandir is dedicated to Shri Vishnu. It was built in the Hemadpanthi style in 1245 AD. Large processions also pass through Barshi on Aashadhi Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi, with Bhagwant riding on Garuda. The two places thus offer different religious highlights: Akkalkot with its temple, banyan tree, and Annachhatra; Barshi with its architectural history and processions.

Landscape, Sanctuary, and Monuments

The Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary was established in 1979 to protect the endangered Great Indian Bustard. It covers areas in the talukas of North Solapur, Madha, Mohol, and Karmala in Solapur district, as well as Karjat, Shrigonda, and Newasa in Ahmednagar district.

The Ujjani Dam in Solapur district was built in 1980. Its functions include irrigation, drinking water supply, fishing, and hydroelectric power generation. Kambar Lake, also known as Moti Baug Lake, is a seasonal habitat for migratory birds. The two water sites therefore represent different themes: the dam’s multiple uses and the lake’s seasonal importance as a bird habitat.

Akluj Fort, also known as Shivsrushti Killa, is a historic fort in Solapur district. Its features include ten bastions, massive stone walls, and a gate called Darwaza, decorated with sculptures of soldiers. The fort is easily accessible by road. Visitors interested in architecture will find a different kind of attraction here than at the temples: the bastions, walls, and gate are the fort’s distinctive features.

Rail Connections and Finding a Hotel

Solapur railway station is an important station on Central Railway and lies on the Pune–Hyderabad and Pune–Chennai railway routes. Akkalkot Road railway station is another named rail connection: it is about 11 kilometers from the town of Akkalkot and is on Central Railway’s Solapur–Wadi route. The distance refers to Akkalkot, while the information about Solapur refers to its station and the routes mentioned there.

Decide whether Solapur itself, with its Siddheshwar Temple and festival traditions, is your main focus, or whether you would rather center your trip on a particular place such as Akkalkot, Barshi, or Pandharpur. This lets you start your search for hotels in Solapur by considering which temple, festival, landscape, or architectural themes are most important to your trip.
