A trip to Junnar brings several cultural and historical points of interest in the surrounding area into focus: the Junnar Caves, the Tulja-Bhavani cave group near Thakarwadi, and Shivneri Fort. They differ in both their architectural features and their geographical settings. This provides a clear starting point when deciding whether Buddhist rock-cut architecture or a visit to a fort should be the focus of your trip.

Buddhist caves in the surrounding area

The Junnar Caves are rock-cut complexes dating back about 2,000 years. Their features include chaityas and viharas. Chaityas are prayer halls; viharas are rooms carved into the rock that served Buddhist monks. These terms make the cave architecture more concrete: alongside their approximate age, you can also identify different types of spaces as features of the complexes. This gives travelers interested in Buddhist architecture a clear focus that goes beyond the general term “caves.”

The Tulja-Bhavani Caves form a distinct group of Buddhist caves. They include a stupa, viharas carved into the rock for Buddhist monks, a dining room, and an assembly hall. In comparison with the Junnar Caves, the stupa and communal spaces stand out here alongside the viharas; at Junnar, chaityas and viharas are among the defining features. These differences give you a concrete basis for distinguishing between the two cave sites and matching them to your cultural interests.

Understanding the location and access

The Tulja-Bhavani Caves are near Thakarwadi, west of Shivneri Fort, in Junnar district, but not in the town of Junnar. The Junnar Caves are six kilometers from the fort, while Shivneri Fort itself is 2–3 km from Junnar. The distances therefore refer to two different points of reference: the town to the fort, and the fort to the caves. Keep the respective points of reference in mind when factoring these cultural sites into your travel plans. The location near Thakarwadi, west of the fort, refers to Tulja-Bhavani; the six kilometers, by contrast, refers to the Junnar Caves.

Local transport and a short hike are available for reaching Shivneri Fort. Check the current local arrangements before your trip. In addition to the distance, this gives you a practical tip for visiting the fort. If you plan to include both the caves and the fort, treat the fort visit as a separate item alongside the cave sites.

Junnar as a hotel-search destination

This distinction helps separate your accommodation decision from the choice of individual attractions. Decide which of the cave complexes—or whether Shivneri Fort—matches your travel interests, and keep their respective locations in mind.
