Discover Sehore: Heritage, Nature and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Sehore
Travel interests in Sehore district range from archaeological sites and historic buildings to river landscapes, protected areas and regional cuisine. When planning a stay, you can choose from these different highlights: history, nature, seasonal activities, festivals or dishes associated with Sehore.
Culture and History in Sehore District
Saru-Maru is an archaeological site with an ancient monastic complex and Buddhist caves. It is located near the village of Pangoraria in Budhani Tehsil, Sehore district. Two of Ashoka’s inscriptions were found in the main cave. Talpura is also associated with Buddhist heritage: it has painted rock shelters, two Buddhist stupas and other remains.
Sehore is home to All Saints’ Church, built in 1838 by a British political agent from Scotland. It is an exact replica of a church in Scotland. The cenotaphs of Kunwar Chain Singh are another historic landmark. They stand on the banks of the Lotia River and commemorate the battle between Chain Singh of the state of Narsingh Garh and the political agent Mr. Medhank.
Ganesh Mandir also offers a specific landmark to include in your plans: the temple is in the village of Gopalpur, three kilometres from the district headquarters. Many devotees visit it every Wednesday. The cultural landscape thus includes historic memorials, religious sites and archaeological remains.
Rivers, Protected Areas and Seasonal Activities
The Narmada and Tawa rivers meet at Bandhurang Ghat. The Kolar flows through Sehore district; the Kolar Dam is a tourist attraction where boating is available.
Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary lies in Raisen and Sehore districts and covers more than 825.90 km². It has three gates: Jhiri, Delawadi and Bhimbetka. Safaris through the Jhiri and Delawadi gates can be booked online or at the entrance. Entry is permitted only in vehicles registered with the sanctuary. Check current booking rules and fees before making plans, as they may change.
Another seasonal option is the Kheoni forest, which spans Dewas and Sehore districts. During the monsoon season, safaris are closed there, but guided walks are available. If you are planning a trip at this time of year, the distinction between closed safaris and available walks is particularly relevant.
Festivals and Regional Cuisine
Festivals are held every year at Bandhurang Ghat for Makar Sankranti and Kartik Purnima. A large festival is held every year during Navratri at Salkanpur Temple in Sehore district. A festival is also held on the second day of Deepawali at the Barakhama Dev site in the village of Barakhamal. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these occasions, check the specific event dates in advance.
Cuisine offers another useful point of reference when planning a trip. Kachouri is a dish from Sehore that is usually eaten for breakfast. Daal Bati, also known as Bafla, is considered a traditional dish from Sehore and is a popular choice in both urban and rural areas. The two dishes therefore represent different, yet equally local, eating habits.
