Katni combines religious traditions with evidence of human history and a park focused on science. The places have different emphases: Maa Jalpa Devi Temple is in the city centre, Chaturyug Dham is in the village of Badera, and Hare Madhav Darbar is in Madhavnagar. Chittaranjan Rock Forest is located in Jhinjhri. When planning a trip, you can first consider whether religious sites, prehistoric traces or the park are of particular interest for your stay.

Religious Sites and Community Traditions

The site of Peer Baba on the Katni–Jabalpur road includes the shrine of Hazrat Itreshah Baba. It stands across the road from the old temple of Lord Bajrangbali, also known as Hanuman. The two named sites side by side define this religious place. During the annual Urs of Peer Baba, people of all religions come together for the celebrations. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the specific event date in advance.

Other religious sites have different emphases: Chaturyug Dham Badera is a religious site in the village of Badera on the Katni–Maihar road. In Madhavnagar, Hare Madhav Darbar is a Gurdwara. The place names help distinguish these sites; each represents its own religious institution or place.

Maa Jalpa Devi Temple is in the centre of Katni. The temple contains images of Maa Jalpa, Kalka and Sharda, as well as 64 Yoginis. This brings the focus back to the city centre and a temple whose named images and number of Yoginis give it a specific emphasis. Together with the Urs, the Gurdwara and the other sites, this illustrates the range of religious themes that may make Katni an interesting place to visit.

Rock Paintings and Prehistoric Traces

Prehistoric evidence also gives Katni a distinctive historical focus. Katni preserves evidence relating to the way of life, weapons and hunting practices of prehistoric people, associated with a history dating back 10,000 years. This account covers various aspects of life and hunting at the time.

Rock paintings thousands of years old can be seen in Chittaranjan Rock Forest in Jhinjhri. Features mentioned there include figures carved into rocks, depictions of hunting and the dwellings of prehistoric people, as well as footprints. The Rock Forest also has a museum about the remains of prehistoric people. At this site, rock paintings, depictions carved into rock and a museum are therefore linked by a common theme.

Jagriti Park in Madhavnagar

Jagriti Park in Madhavnagar, run by the Katni Paryavaran Sanrakshan Samiti, is called an “Oxygen Tank.” The park includes a science park intended to expand children’s knowledge. This focus differs from that of the religious sites and prehistoric themes: the science park explicitly centres on educating children. The park’s nickname helps visitors orient themselves, while the science park describes a distinct aspect of the park.

When planning your trip, you can choose between the themes based on what you would like to experience: religious sites, evidence of prehistory or the science park. The annual Urs is also a specific reason to check the event date in advance if the festival is a deciding factor for your trip.
